  • A thought on Ali Farokhmanesh

OK - so I'll admit I never liked the guy but probably that's just because he always seems to kill us...
but I respect him....and yesterday I think he PROVED beyond doubt...

--that there's always room on any college team's roster for a guard who can reliably hit the outside shot you need in the clutch...even if he's small, unathletic, not a good defender, or even if his overall stats don't impress.....
So - next time someone says we need to STOP recruiting guards....check back on this thread.....

Ali also benefits from having a 7' center and 6'-10" forward that take some of the defensive attention away from him....

I agree though, I would take Ali F. anyday on my team

      Ali

It was one of many great shots in the games yesterday. You have to give it to him Tornado.

It does help him get more open looks because UNI has an inside presence, Ali is also a better athlete then most people realize.

I agree...Ali is a pretty darn good player, so give him some credit...

I also agree that because UNI not only has Koch, O'Rear, and Eglseder, BUT they also have a couple pretty good playmakers in Moran and Ahelegbe....

This opens the floor greatly for the shooters, particularly Farokhmanesh...

Would be nice for us to have the great shooting JC get this offseason...first it was Booker Woodfox, then it was Farokhmanesh, who's the next guy?

As of now, it looks like it could be Leonard or Wedel....Maybe it could be someone the Braves bring in (hopefully)

I agree with you overall...but I think AF is an underrated defender and is VERY strong physically for his size. He does a great job of staying in front of his man and fighting through screens.

Just look at the lift on the jumpshot he is taking. While certainly undersized, He's a better athlete than given credit for.

but let's see how they do next year without them all...
and I suspect just maybe when all our best players are seniors..that we might be pretty solid as well....

Maybe, but I'd rather not approach this in the Molinari style way of only winning every 4th (or 5th) year.

Besides, they did win everything in the conference last year as well...

I don't think anyone will disagree with we should not stop recruiting guards We had/have some of the best play here But it won't pay dividends again until we establish a real inside game to go with those guards We need a big coach and I am talking about one who knows how to play inside, maybe played it himself and can teach it Then we need a couple bigs that will learn and can/want to play I'm not talking a 6'5-6 at the 4 or a light weight or a 4 playing at the 5 A team just like UNI
We had a team like that one year. remember that sweet 16 run

We have pretty good guards this year! Know one has said we should not be looking for quality shooting guards. What everyone has said T is that our priority should be a big and when we say big we mean a real 5. If we get a bruiser I really would not care after that what position JL decides to stockpile.

I agree....I've always liked him. He comes to play all the time and has the necessary toughness it takes to play. He's never backed off from taking a big shot...much like SM

I very much agree. A decent true 5 big with WE and JP (the way we are using them) would help us immensely.

I think Ali Farokhmanesh is a pretty good defender. I don't have a great eye for basketball, but I recall seeing him being assigned to hound the opposing teams' PGs from one end of the court to the other in the MVC tourney.

I don't think you let a guy do that if he can't handle it.
