  • 6 teams for 3 spots

That's the way I see it. These 6 teams are competing for 3 available spots in the NCAA tourney...

    Utah State
    UTEP
    Virginia Tech
    Mississippi State
    Florida
    Illinois

Mississippi State is playing now, so they control their own destiny. The major question to be answered is whether the committee will reward dominant records by mid majors in conference play or mediocrity in a BCS league. After analyzing the profiles of all 6 of these teams, in my mind there is no doubt that Utah State and UTEP have far better profiles than the other 4 on this list. Thus I am going to assume that they get in, but would not be completely shocked if they do not. Mississippi State can then take the final spot with a win today. After careful consideration, it appears that Illinois has not done enough to warrant a bid, so the final spot should come down to Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, or Florida, and trying to differentiate between those 3 teams is next to impossible. But like I said, Mississippi State can make the choice easy by winning today.

I actually believe Utah State and UTEP should be ahead of at least 3 other teams that are going to get in, even though they probably should be more nervous than they likely are. These 3 teams are UNLV, Gonzaga, and Wake Forest. I could have thrown Notre Dame in there as well, but the way they have played recently probably places them ahead of these 3. Even though they will get in, these 3 teams may not get the seed they expect.

I also believe that many people will be surprised at the better than expected seeds that California and Missouri will get. I believe Missouri will likely be seeded better than Oklahoma State from the Big 12. In fact, overall the seeds from the Big 12 are likely to be better than many expect, and maybe I should have included Texas on this list too as a team that will be seeded better than many expect.

Cal will be dicier than people think.

Other than that, I'd have Minny on the list too, but the rest of it closely mirrors my projections.

Miss. St. almost took themselves off the bubble and in, winning the SEC vr. Kentucky. They were .1 away from winning the game. It is in overtime now.

Who gets in now...Mississippi State or Virginia Tech? There's only 1 spot left, and it's pretty much a coin flip now. I think Florida is out after the performance of MSU today.

Yeah. Hard to say. I'd give the nod to Miss. St. for getting to the final and pushing Kentucky to overtime twice.

I gotta think MSU could get chosen based on the fact that they lost by one point in overtime. Taking what could possibly be the overall number one seed of the tourney to overtime and losing by one point could be almost as good as a victory, especially coming in their last game of the season. So despite their otherwise weak resume, MSU has shown they could play with anyone in the country this weekend.

I still think Utah St. and UTEP are in as well, but it may be closer than people think. I think the three teams in big trouble now are Florida, Illinois and Virginia Tech. Great! That's all I need to hear, Billy Donovan, Seth Greenberg and Bruce Weber complaining again as to why they did not make the tourney!

Mississippi State has some superb athletes- Rick Stansbury is a great recruiter. But how they don't win more games year after year is hard to understand. IMO, this year's team is their best in the last 6 years, and yet they probably won't get in the NCAA Tournament.

And all you can say is that John Wall is incredible. Kentucky is a great team, but they would not be half as good without Wall. He is the most clutch and talented player I've seen since Michael Jordan.

                ...
ahem...repeat after me...always, always, always.....if the selection committee is down to fewer spots than possible candidates, the midmajor schools will ALWAYS get the lowest consideration...
and it it comes down to two BCS conference schools..then the one who was once a midmajor will get the least consideration...
thus Illinois, Miss. State, and Florida are in...
Utah State, UTEP, and Va. tech are out....book it...

he also has an uncanny way of traveling 20 times a game that he doesn't get called for it..

Joe has now moved Miss. St. out and Illinois is the last team in.

Lunardi has apparently received his inside info that says Illinois is in, and Virginia Tech and Mississippi State are both out. Apparently both UTEP and Utah State will get in as they should. That means I'll probably get 64 of 65 right again this year...

They would not be as good, but at the end of this game, Cousins stood out quite a bit as well. Wall did get a steal and a nice layup to bring Kentucky closer, but at the end of the 2nd half, Wall came up short on an open jumper in the lane and then after Cousins missed the 2nd free throw intentionally, it was Wall who threw up an airball and ended up getting lucky because it ended up in Cousins hands who put it in to tie it and send it to overtime. In OT I did see Wall make a ridiculous three, but without both Wall and Cousins, this team is not even close to being as good. So much for that experience thing right?

One last time - Joe Lunardi does not = the selection committee

the guy does more flip-flops than the shoe department at Wal-mart

Here was his "Bracketology" that I copied from a couple days ago...

                              BUBBLE
IN Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Florida, Illinois, Notre Dame..Arizona State
OUT Washington, UAB, Ole Miss, Wichita State, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, Dayton, Mississippi State, Minnesota, South Florida, Connecticut

Now he says he has Florida & Illinois out
and Minnesota in...and has swapped a few others....
This is likely the toughest year to guess in recent memory..but I still contend the anti-midmajor bias will prevail...
