  • Wichita pleads for NCAA bid

I hope they do get in and do well, but I do not think they're gonna get a bid to the NCAA..

    here's what they think...

"Gregg Marshall pointed to the depth of the Valley as another reason why the Shockers are deserving of an NCAA tournament bid.

The Shockers beat a 20-win Missouri State team, seeded seventh in the tourney, in the quarterfinals, before knocking off 22-10 Illinois State in the semis.

“This league is a pretty good basketball league,” Marshall said. “We had to play a team with 20 wins in the quarterfinals that was getting Top 25 votes for five straight weeks.”

Wichita State is 25-8, and was the No. 2 seed in the MVC tourney. He said his team shines in tournament play.

“Our team is built for this type of tournament, and built for postseason play,” Marshall said. “We’ve got size. We’ve got 7-footers, we’ve got long, rangy athletes. We’re going to defend. I have a lot of thoughts in my mind.

“Northern Iowa is a great team. They’ll win games in the NCAA tournament, and I’ve got experience as an NCAA tournament coach."

And now the waiting begins for the Wichita State Shockers. “We’ll just wait it out and see where we stand,” senior guard Clevin Hannah said following Wichita’s ...

--but their non-conference SOS was down around 300
--and Iowa & Texas Tech were not good teams to brag about...
--and early on when you guys played Pitt, they were struggling a bit - and almost lost to Wofford (63-60) and Duquesne (double overtime) and only scored 47 against New Hampshire.
--and "long, rangy athletes" don't get automatic bids...
--and why boast about beating Missouri state and claiming they were getting votes in the Top 25?? Missouri State went 7-10 since New Year's
--and maybe wait 'til Northern Iowa ever wins an NCAA game before piling your hopes on their success?

It sounds like you don't want WSU in the tournament. Shouldn't we be supporting them? Doesn't it make us and our league look better? If we were in their position we'd be doing the same thing.

IMO WSU deserves to be in the tournament. I agree with what Marshall says an believe that if they get in they could potentially be a Sweet 16 team. Call me nuts but that's what I think.

        I hope they get in.

My argument for: They made the tourney championship while other bubble teams are losing in their first round or quarterfinals...

Argument against: Not enough quality wins, and certainly not enough away from home.

The Shox scheduled well just a shame that Iowa and Texas Tech turned out to be busts. I don't see them having any shot at a bid.

Why are we so anti-valley. If we were on the bubble and someone on this board wrote that about Bradley, posts would be deleted; anti Bradley would be shouted, statistics about how we did this and that would be flashed.

You can join in with the talking heads and come up with all sorts of scenarios why the BCS 8th place teams need to be in, or you can be a fan, watch the games and make an educated arguement. I'm a Valley fan and I think we have 4 teams that deserve to be in the two big tourney's - UNI, WSU (NCAA) MSU, ISU (NIT). Other than ISU, the three others played good teams and beat several teams that will play in the NCAA and NIT. MSU the worst of the group, beat 5 teams that will play in the NCAA and NIT and some on this site are bashing them for their schedule. You could also argue that the BCS schools we played this year destroyed out SOS. Depaul, LSU, Iowa, Illinois, Iowa State, Auburn, Arkansas, Pitt, etc... Have hurt the league more than helped, but if you listen to the morons on ESPN that is why we aren't passing the eye test. If Indy State would have taken a home game with Farleigh Dickinson over a road game with LSU, their SOS would have been higher. I'm sure when the Indy St. AD sat down and made the schedule he wouldn't of dreamed that LSU with McDonalds All Americans would be a bad choice.

I did, but those seem to be minimized by the dressing down of their entire season at the bottom of the post. I was just wondering. I hope they get in and do well too, but unfortunately I don't see it happening.

I hope they get in I think they could of done better against NIU if they had not had two really tough games before they played them If they get in, like BB said, it only helps the MVC Lets all pull for one of our MVC brothers Just like we should be pulling for the only Illinois team that has a chance to get in Go Illini

Bracketbusters was created to seperate the bubble teams.
Wichita had a great shot, but didn't even make it a game.
While their RPI is good, they lost games they should have won.
They needed to have a winning conf. road record, and they didn't do well on the road at 3-6.
Texas Tech and Iowa were not supposed to be good anyhow. T. Tech just started out well with a surprising start. Very bad scheduling for the Shox.
CU had more wins last year, had some quality non-conf. wins, and did well on the road in the Valley...and they got snubbed.
I really don't think they're deserving this year, and I am all for the Valley!
Hope they make it, but that would be the biggest surprise for the Valley since we got 4 teams in '05-'06.
                    I don't even think they'll get a #1 seed in the NIT.

I will agree with T on this though - They have no one to blame but themselves if they don't get in. You can't schedule that poorly and expect to get an at-large. Just dreadful.

then I mostly proceeded to quote them....those aren't my words...
and I would be ecstatic if they got in....but I am being realistic.....

                          so who is anti-Valley?
their schedule was weak and if bragging about having to get past Missouri State is their plea for an NCAA bid, then I can only wonder what the Selection Committee is gonna think...

BTW - I think the A-10 played their cards right...
their 4th place team (SLU) played absolutely NOBODY (except Rockhurst, Mississippi Valley State, and SEMO) that they could beat in the non-con part of their schedule, but still gets some talk about at-large??
Richmond & Rhode Island also played a whole lot of fluff (note all their 250+ opponents) and seem to be getting away with it compared to the the MVC.

and the MWC is getting talk of 4 teams in the tourney, but didn't we beat them in the MVC/MWC head to head??
Basically - as I have said many times - the Valley is penalized for its parity...
the 8th place team isn't much weaker than the 2nd place team, but the selection committee doesn't see it that way..

They have a good case as 2nd place in our league is or should be an added plus, remember a lot of the bcs teams will not play valley teams so trying to schedule tougher opponents is not a given, if Illinois gets in then Wichita deserves a bid .

                              Teams get bids, not conferences.

                              Repeat after me.
