  • Doug Elgin to ISU, etc... "embarrassing"

Several different interviews with Doug Elgin over the weekend addressed the issue of the Valley teams scheduling so horribly.
you can google and find them easily and one is in the PJS...

The phrases "embarrassing", and "Don't play teams with terrible records", and "NCAA won't reward mediocrity", show up...
and just about everyone notes that ISU and SIU were TWO teams that had non-conference Strengths of Schedule that ranked near the bottom of all of Division I..
330th out of 340 teams....worse than all the NJIT's and California Polytechnics...

it truly is embarrassing, and I have been on this topic for a couple years trying to shine the light on the worst offenders.....namely ISU!!
get your act together and stop hurting the rest of the Valley!

ISU has many issues about their "embarrassing" program. More to come about O.E.s FUN weekend (And it's not about playing ball)!

Here's KW's article. Spot on, as he usually is. Props to Doug Elgin for admitting his mistakes. I hope the scheduling requirements are brought back.

It's not good when your two best at-large resumes contain non-con SoS ratings in the 300's. Don't forget Wichita St was in the drecks too.

            Non-conference SoS numbers:

            75 Indiana St
            147 Bradley
            170 Creighton
            257 Northern Iowa
            259 Drake
            267 Missouri St
            295 Wichita St
            295 Southern Illinois
            324 Illinois St
            335 Evansville

0 teams in the top 50
1 team in the top 100, which ended up being a non-contender
2 teams in the top 150, which both ended up being non-contenders
3 teams in the top 250, which all ended up being non-contenders

As I said on the other thread earlier, Elgin's face said it all when they showed him during the MVC championship game yesterday.

While I agree with the general tone of this thread- it is disingenuous to point out ISU alone- and the Commissioner didn't single anyone out.

The Wessler article pointed out the worst offenders in terms of SOS- but regardless of how other teams schedule- all BU has to worry about is 1. How we schedule 2. The results!
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

I don't fully agree here. Being in this conference means we have an interest in how our conferencemates schedule as it will affect our own numbers (and by extension how the selection committee views our results).

I agree with the fish. Imagine being a border line NCAA team which we could have and not being picked because of our SOS. Our SOS effects the rest of the schools in our league as well as theirs effects ours. That is how it works. We've made plenty of noise on this subject since last year. I'm not satisfied with our schedule to be honest but compared to everyone else ours looks great. Imagine that? This is one subject that cannot and should not be taken lightly by the commissioner. I do not feel sorry for WSU. They had the ability to play in the NCAA but their schedule gave them zero chance except by winning yesterday's game of making it.

I think we need to concentrate on getting Bradley on track instead of worrying about what the other schools are doing, when BU starts getting into the championship game multiple times then we can worry about some other teams schedule and how it effects us.

WSU really shot themselves in the foot. They had a 3-1 record against recognized programs: Pitt, Iowa, TCU, and TX Tech.

But then also scheduled a bunch of real dogs like Farleigh dickinson, Alcorn St, Texas Southern, South Carolina Upstate, and more.

WSU didn't need to schedule any more marquee programs but should have scheduled more upper mid-major programs and less bottom tier programs. Losing to Utah St in the bracket buster didn't help either.
