Say what you want about Kirk Wessler, but he was spot on with this article!
Doug Elgin admits that he dropped the ball after the 2006 season when some of the lower tiered programs pressured him to drop the schedule requirements he had instilled on the conference several years earlier. But I can't put the entire blame on him as a whole slew of new AD's, coaches and presidents put Elgin's whole system in limbo. Many of the new AD's and presidents did not want to deal with the "stringent" requirement of a top 150 RPI schedule, and unfortunately Elgin gave in to their demands. He now regrets what he did and is hoping to put forth a new effort to set the conference up for future multi-bid seasons by hopefully reestablishing the original schedule requirements.
As I stated yesterday on another thread, Doug Elgin looked none too pleased when UNI broke ahead of Wichita St. in the MVC final. The look on his face when CBS showed him said it all, and becoming a one bid league for three years in a row will do that, despite the nice comments towards the Valley from Dick Enberg and Bill Raftery.
We have to do better than this and KW is absolutely 100% right in saying that this is unacceptable. Only Bradley and Indiana St. had solid top 100 (actually top 65) SOS's, while ISU red, SIU and Evansville's were absolutely deplorable! I hope for the sake of the Valley that Doug Elgin keeps his word and won't be so quick to succumb to the pressure of certain programs in the future.
