  • Valley needs to strengthen it's schedule

Say what you want about Kirk Wessler, but he was spot on with this article!

Doug Elgin admits that he dropped the ball after the 2006 season when some of the lower tiered programs pressured him to drop the schedule requirements he had instilled on the conference several years earlier. But I can't put the entire blame on him as a whole slew of new AD's, coaches and presidents put Elgin's whole system in limbo. Many of the new AD's and presidents did not want to deal with the "stringent" requirement of a top 150 RPI schedule, and unfortunately Elgin gave in to their demands. He now regrets what he did and is hoping to put forth a new effort to set the conference up for future multi-bid seasons by hopefully reestablishing the original schedule requirements.

As I stated yesterday on another thread, Doug Elgin looked none too pleased when UNI broke ahead of Wichita St. in the MVC final. The look on his face when CBS showed him said it all, and becoming a one bid league for three years in a row will do that, despite the nice comments towards the Valley from Dick Enberg and Bill Raftery.

We have to do better than this and KW is absolutely 100% right in saying that this is unacceptable. Only Bradley and Indiana St. had solid top 100 (actually top 65) SOS's, while ISU red, SIU and Evansville's were absolutely deplorable! I hope for the sake of the Valley that Doug Elgin keeps his word and won't be so quick to succumb to the pressure of certain programs in the future.

When I interviewed DE, I asked him a few questions about this. Behold:

    3. Since the league has received no at-large bids to the Men's Tournament in the last two seasons, is it possible that the non-conference scheduling mandate will reappear? Or has it become too difficult for MVC teams to schedule top-level schools because of the Valley's success against them?

I think we have to analyze how we are scheduling our non-conference games every spring, and I wouldn’t rule out any possible approach to improving our overall schedule strength. It is important that our head coaches and athletic directors understand the linkage between strong schedules and overall conference success in placing multiple teams in the NCAA Tournament. It isn’t easy to schedule power teams in non-conference play, especially when you’ve had some success. We know that from experience. None of our teams should stake their hopes of playing in the NCAA Tournament on winning the State Farm MVC Tournament and the automatic bid. Those teams who intend to contend for a conference championship need to “schedule up.” Strategic schedule planning has to be an ongoing 2- to 3-year cycle – getting into early-season tournaments with strong fields is critical. And our coaches and ADs need to be creative in getting strong and balanced non-conference schedules.

    6. Have you noticed a major change in revenue to the league with the recent struggles of the economy?

We have seen a drop in revenues in the past two years in championship tournament sponsorship revenues and in basketball tournament ticket sales, but it has not been significant. Over the past 2-3 years, more than 70% of the Missouri Valley’s gross revenues have come from the NCAA Basketball Pool Distribution – the money that is channeled to the MVC’s 10 schools from the NCAA for the league’s participation in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. While we have seen a significant drop in these revenues, that has nothing to do with the economy but is based on the number of tournament “units” we earn as a conference – or more simply put – how many NCAA Tournament games our teams have played in over a rolling six-year period.

70% is an incredible number, and now that rolling six-year period has three years of one bid, so it will take some time to erase them from the books.
Don't putt until the cup stops movin'

thanks mayhem...it's been a peeve of mine for years that some Valley teams schedule so incredibly poorly...for whatever purpose...
maybe just getting a pretty record...maybe trying to please some fans...they are not only shooting themselves in the foot but they are hurting the rest of the Valley...
now, they are pinning their hopes on the wrong thing...they are hoping for NCAA Tourney expansion, then hoping even teams with ISU-like schedules can get in!

        Great analysis mayhem!

And I agree tornado, even with a 96 team NCAA Tournament I think ISU would be right on the bubble. WSU would get in which would be an improvement over what we will see this year. But ISU would still be sweating it out on Selection Sunday.

ISU would be in a 96 team field (pending how many automatic bids the NCAA decides to give out to lower conference schools).

Maybe so..but they would at the very least be under consideration--we wouldn't even get sniff Time to stop worrying about everyone else's schedule and start figuring out how to beat ISU next year and win some **** games ourselves

Next season bradley non-conference motto has to be anyone anywhere anytime. We should compete for a top 3 spot and I only say that because honestly I think we should compete for the TOP spot. We need to schedule up. Screw getting wins...we need to get quality opponents over and over and over and over again to get us toughened up for the conference schedule. If we lose the majority that's fine as long as it has benefits later on, and also the more we play them the more opportunity we have to beat them. To be the best you need to play the best....no more of this loyola crap. Buy-games galore I don't care....I like watching them on TV at BWW or something. This team needs to constantly challenge themselves until the conference season starts...no ifs ands or buts about it. Get it done.

Pretty close to. Can't see the committee denying a 10-6 ACC team this year.

But again, a team like this can play an awful schedule and make the tournament as long as they take advantage of the numerous opportunities to beat quality teams within their conference. We can't do this in the Valley though unless we have another season like 2006 where our great teams fed on themselves for great conference wins. The A-10 and MWC are having similar seasons this year.

I really think most Valley schools WOULD schedule up if they could...but aside from pre season tournaments, it's easier said than done when you are in a "mid-major" . And I agree, we SHOULD compete for a top 3 spot next year too...but since we have never finished above 4th under Les, I don't have a lot of optimism, and then even if we DO finish 3rd, we would likely still have to win the Valley tourney to go dancing

It doesn't have to be the top BCS schools, either. I would like to see more A-10, WAC and CUSA teams scheduled as well.

Great point! I have been suggesting this for quite awhile now.
