Purdue wins and loses - Hummel knee injury

Purdue barely got by Minnesota last night for the 59-58 win, but they may have lost their chances of finishing strong over the rest of the season...

their best player Robbie Hummel injured his knee in the first half, left the game and did not return, staying on the bench and using crutches to exit the floor...
Hummel will be examined today to make a determination as to the extent of the injury, but he could be done for the season...
Hummel already had 11 points just a little past the mid-point of the first half when he was injured.

Here is a video of the play in which Hummel was injured...it is fairly graphic and might turn your stomach to watch...
His right knee appears to bend about 30 degrees outward laterally, almost assuring he did some serious damage to his right medial collateral ligament...

Pure speculation here - But did this look more of the MCL/PCL variety as opposed to the ACL, and with the NCAA's still 3+ weeks away, would there be a chance he could recover in time to play? Or is that unrealistic and overly optimistic? I'm not a Purdue fan at all, but I hate to see great seasons for players and teams ended like that.

A lateral deviation like this most likely tore the MCL (medial collateral ligament- the stabilizing ligament on "inseam" side of the knee). But with enough deviation, the internal ligaments (ACL or PCL) can also be torn. There may also be some internal cartilage damage with lateral injuries.

Gotcha. Season over. I would hate to be a Purdue fan today. Talk about having your heart ripped right out. I work with one, I should probably go buy him a coffee...or something more potent after work. ;)

I suspect they'll do everything possible to try to get him back...
but it depends probably on what an MRI shows inside the knee

there's a little classlessness on one of the Hooiser boards...one thread on the IU board had to be locked and a few posts deleted when a few Indiana fans started celebrating Hummel's injury and they got taken to task by the others....

Well Robbie's grandma is saying it's his ACL. Poor kid. Poor team. I just hate to see seasons end this way, especially at this point in the year.

I'm pissed as a fan because Robbie's game is one of the more enjoyable ones to watch. He is one tough kid and if anyone can get back to playing it would be him. I wish him luck.

Send me that link saying his grandma said that. Sounds like pure bullcrap to me!

Don't have a link. Hummel's family has close ties to U of I (I believe his grandfather is/was a professor) and told a friend of mine down there. So take it FWIW, but I can assure that this is the case.

Hummel's move cutting to his left and his knee going out, was indeed eerily reminiscent of exactly what happened to Will Egolf...

Talked to friend who goes to Purdue.....even though I HATE purdue....i hate to see something like this happen. They are fighting for a number one seed and have big hopes....hopefully something keeps them afloat. I like robbie hummel too.

Gotcha. Season over. I would hate to be a Purdue fan...

Gettin back to the topic...I read a hundred different article yesterday saying how this tremendously hurts Purdue's chances, and that they will even lose their chances of a #1 seed....etc...

Wait a minute....wait just one minute...
haven't we all been lectured by the experts that you CAN'T USE INJURIES AS AN EXCUSE?
