  • Charging Foul Resulting in Free Throws

Forgot to ask about this earlier, but in the 2nd half when UNI was in the bonus, DSE got called for a foul and it looked like they called charging. However they counted the basket and then UNI went to shoot free throws. Does anyone know what the call actually was? I thought that no free throws were awarded, even if the team is in the bonus, for an offensive foul. Some people around me, as well as myself, were all confused at how they could call a charge, count the basket, and then give UNI free throws.

Because they said he had gotten the shot off prior to his hitting the defensive player it would be akin to hitting another player on a loose ball so it is a team foul and therefore free throws are awarded...however it was a bogus call because the guy was right under the hoop.

This is a rather bizarre call that you see about once a year. Yes, the official (Higgins) ruled that DSE had released the shot before he made contact under the basket by the UNI defender, who was not playing defense, but just positioning himself to be under DSE. In that case, it's not called a "player control foul", and handled like any other common foul. Since UNI was in the bonus, they got to shoot free throws. Player control fouls are called when the player in contol of the ball is guilty, and they result only in a change of posession.

Did anyone else notice though that right after this call, Higgins made 3 quick foul calls on UNI and all of them seemed to be ticky-tack fouls away from the ball. It seemed like he was calling make-up calls to benefit BU.

I noticed it too. I was sitting right behind Less as he was giving the refs an earful letting them know the fouls were 7-3 (not in our favor)!!!

You were probably sitting right near a recruit that was there at the game. Did you see a kid there with his mother and dad in the front row, right behind the BU bench?

I thought that once Higgins blew that foul call....he thought twice and decided that he should cop out with the rare call. i thought that there was contact before DSE released the ball....then again i was on the other end behind the basket (bad view).

Inquiring minds do want to know! Was he tall or on the shorter end?

.....on a charge the defender MUST give the player room to land. If a player plows into the defender and the D is obviously set, its a charge.

If a player releases the ball before contact is made and he's in the air he has to be allowed room to land. DSE did just that...he scooped the shot THEN on the way down made contact so its a blocking foul as I understand it. Not to mention, as someone already pointed out, the guy was reading the newspaper camped under, almost directly under, the basket.

Heres another often missed call I have seen called only once. You have 5 seconds to inbound the ball once the ref gives you posession out of bounds. Inbounding the ball means a player on your team must touch it.....so when you roll the ball up court you are on the clock. UNI did it once and it went almost all the way to the halfcourt (why we don't force them to pick it up right away is another issue) but the ref must be counting while the ball is rolling becuase they STILL, as I said, only have the 5 count to pick it up and put it in play.

Watch the official....he doesn't initiate a 5 sec. count once the ball is rolled up the court.

There is a platform of seats just behind and to the right of the bench (if you are facing the team bench) where recruits often sit. I saw one kid in sweats with his dad. He was kinda tall but rather thin. White with blonde hair.

Again tall but did not look like a "banger" aka "Shrek" (Egleslaterbater) or "Shrek jr." (OOOORear).....

Speaking of OOOORear.....BU did a good job neutralizing him from what I saw. He didn't do much.

I did not recognize him. He and his family got to the game a little late. He was about 6'4".

he never does vs. Bradley - and Eglseder never has all that much sucess vs. BU...we do a good job of defending him...

I never thought of that. Seems like I should have seen that called many times if the refs were doing their job. The defending team could help get it called by showing pressure for the first second or two then dropping all the way back. I'll be looking for this from now on.

ANd again...the count should start when he gives him the ball.....so 1....he throws it softly in 2....3.....its rolling up the court....4......??????....... does it get to 5. More often then not once the player throws the ball in the count is stopped so we never really know.

Maybe its not a point of emphasis or its like the phantom touch of second base the Cardinals really cheat on during a double play......

Either way I HAVE seen it called so I know ONE ref knows the rule.

For the record ALL teams do it...I'm not complaining specifically UNI vs BU. We have benefitted, so to speak, from this also. It really can/could give a team an advantage though lets say if it was a last second shot with very few seconds remaining.

Still BU should have had Sam real close to force them to pick it up THEN when they do he can quickly drop back past the half court.
