  • Potential new coaches

T---You've got to be kidding regarding a lack of candidates for the BU job should it become open! I can tell you with certainty from past experience that the BU job has been highly regarded by other coaches around the country and we have always had a very large number of coaches apply when the job was advertised.

Locating very good candidates has never been and will never be a problem.

As for where these candidates come from, here are some areas:
    1. BCS Assistant Coaches
    2. JC coaches
    3. Lower level Divn.1 coaches
    4. NBA Assistant Coaches

There are hundreds of potential candidates out there. Our new AD can "mine" the East for good possibilities and seems to have great networking contacts. Think about what the BU job offers---Great BB tradition with BB being the schools major sport; Super facilities; A very good conference; Suppport from BU administration; Excellent salary and benefits; potential national exposure; Super community involvement; Etc. Etc.

As for who, consider these few names---Jerrance Howard; Kevin Eastman; Cornelius at Yuba; The JC coach at Burlington, and many, many others.

Lack of candidates for the BU job would be no problem at all and is not a valid reason for not making a coaching change when needed.

Most of the time, a new coach is not an obvious name to BU fans---Consider this---How many people knew of Versace before he was hired; Where did Forddy Anderson come from; Even Albeck and Mo were surprises to most people prior to being hired by Ferggie.

Now once again, I do not support an immediate change. I believe that after the season JLs record and the programs progress over the past 8 years should be evaluated, specific goals should be established, and he should be given one more year to turn it around. If he doesn't---make a coaching change.

I posted a preliminary list on page 2 of this thread. There are several other names that could be added.

      hey - yet another misstatement...
      NEVER have I said we wouldn't get candidates...no -- we'd get a lot....

--the last time we hired, we got almost 80 applicants, more than 50 of whom were considered viable candidates, then even after their qualifications were closely reviewed, then whittled down and excluding some, more than a dozen were guys who they wanted to interview..

BUT-- the top several who would have been neck and neck with the final four who were brought back for repeat interviews last time (JL, WM, JJ, BG) were still not guys we'd have done any better with...
(recall BG pulled his own name out)

I expect the same would occur if we went through it again...that we'd get lots of applicants...
I had said that I had NOT seen anyone name a prospective candidate...and still haven't seen any name offered that I am convinced would be better than where we are..

I'm real confused here as to how we wouldn't have done better with Brian Gregory...

His teams at Dayton have finished 1st or 2nd 3 times already and are headed for another top 3 finish this year...

Yeah I wonder that too. Probably going to their 3rd NCAA Tournament in his tenure. He is a Chicago native too, and sat at the right hand of Tom Izzo for several years. Yeah, I can't fathom how it's possible we'd be better...

I think Gregory pulled his name out when they gave him some ridiculous lowball figure for what the job paid coupled with the rumor that the job was going to some former player...can't say that I blame him. Looks like it worked out well for him.

Great Post wizard, I couldn't agree more When the time comes, (next year, 5 years or when ever) there will be someone/many that will want the job
This reminds me of what a close friend of mind told me once when I was young and thought the place I was working for could not survive if I left. His name was Bill, a long time friend, he was black, tall, he had one eye, had been around the block many times and was very street smart Great Guy Anyway heres what he said to me
He turned to me and looked straight at me with that one eye and said:
BOY!!, Let me tell you something and don't you EVER forget it
One Monkey don't stop no show. the show will go on, it may or may not be as good but the show will go on It helped me all though my career and as you see I never forgot it. Thanks William (Bill)
Oh and Bill died a long, long time ago and I was one of his pallbearer, carrying the front right corner of his casket, just as he wanted!

Salary for staff in the athletic department is not going to be a concern for the foreseeable future. That's not to say there will still be some poorly funded positions for non-coaching staff, but in time those will be adjusted to be competitive.

So far the assistant compensation hasn't been, thus what we currently have...
