OT: Earthquake

Anyone by any chance feel the earthquake that hit the northwest burbs of Chicago at 4AM this morning? A rarity but not unheard of around here. I just felt a slight vibration in my bed and heard something rattling on a shelf. So at my location about 25 miles west of the epicenter there was not that much, but those closer stated it was definitely strong enough to move objects and houses felt like they were moving. Cool as long as they don't damage anything or kill anyone.

It was a 3.8 magnitude earthquake, btw.

Btw it was a 3.8 magnitude earthquake, so nothing big, but enough to make the media here go nuts! It even took down the 13 inch snowfall we received yesterday and this morning off the top of the headlines!

I know San Fransisco is a nice city to live in but the risk of "the big one" would make me a bit hesitant to live in California. I must admit though that I would not miss the big snows there though, and to have 70 to 80 degree weather at times throughout the winter sounds very tempting!

I had a friend in Dekalb who said that she felt it. Earthquakes have been more common in this area the last few years. I took a look at the faults around here last time there was an earthquake. Surprisingly there is a rather large fault under St. Louis. If there was a major earthquake, say over 7, St. Louis would be devastated.

The New Madrid Fault line runs right through St. Louis. They've been predicting the Big One for about the last 30 or so years. From what I understand these little tremors are good though because they relieve some pressure. Having grown up in the area though it is kind of always way in the back of your mind. Especially since most buildings around there aren't build to with stand them like they are in CA.

Might be wrong....not the first time!!!...but I believe that they are doing things on the interstate bridges, overpasses.....etc... in the St. Louis area to address the issue of a major quake. Believe the quake out in the Bay area during the world series and the images of the highways out there pancaking on each other got them thinking!

wasn't one of the biggest recorded earthquakes in history along this fault line? I heard it shifted the direction of flow of the mississippi river

There already is and always has been an ignore option.
vBulletin board has more user options than any other type of message board. Just check your control panel.
If anyone has questions about how to select options, or needs help, please PM me instead of asking on the forum.

Here's something more to worry about. Do you know there's a a supervolcano sitting right under our own Yellowstone National Park, yes a supervolcano. I have watched many documentaries about it and when/if it blows the world and we are going to be in a big hurt. I'm not going to post the many links but it's easy to do a search on it.
