Was it an aberration or is Illinois really not that good or do we just match up against them well?
I watched the game the game yesterday (btw thanks MM!) and came away with a few thoughts.
CR - It seems first of all the CR has had troubles making those shots when he drives to the rim, nothing with that is different. What is different his outside shot looked a bit more relaxed. He was shooting as part of the flow not pressing. He looked very relaxed! His D was outstanding and he was extremely active on that end of the floor.
AW - Had a bit more energy, was driving strong to the basket and his shot looked flawless. He also took his big shots from the top of the key not the corner!
WE - Looked likes WE very active. He plays 5s who are a bit thin extremely well. Ran the floor extremely well.
TB - Picked up a few cheap fouls, looked great for stretches and really crashed the boards hard. He was also very active running the floor.
SM - When you look at the video again you can see that his ankles are taped up like cement blocks. Still Mr. clutch down the stretch.
Now the differences are more apparent from who we played off the bench.
EM - played a strong game on D, rebounded and did not turn the ball over while he was in. He looked comfortable!
DSE - Looked great, made things happen and it was a matter of time before he was going to play big minutes.
MK - Looked lost but he did jack up a few shots regardless. You can see why he is not playing too many minutes anymore.
AT - Looked OK. He ran the floor hard and played hard.
SS - Sat on the bench and as I said he must have been injured early on!
The difference is that we looked relaxed, played hard inspired D, played for the whole 40 minutes, the bench played big minutes even AT and we were very active in our offensive sets passing and moving. We do not have the talent where one guy can take over but the sum of the parts when everyone shows up on both sides can be very good. My question is why does it take these big games to get this team playing as a unit? We have enough talent in the MVC to do damage what will it take to see it night in and night out?
