Thanks for the reminder. Wondered why it was not on my DirecTv guide then realized this is the digital OTA 47-2. No DVR, though

It is actually the WTVP-World digital subchannel (not a fan of subchannels that starve HD bandwidth, this game looks like a poor internet feed with it's low bandwidth on the airwave) , not the main WTVP, so if WTVP world is digital, then this is probably not on analog.

Ha! I heard that too! I also heard Dave talk about how poor our shot selection was over that stretch of the gaem, and how terrible AW's pass was. Better watch out Dave, some will start calling you a 'hater'!

I also heard a "This team is clearly better than us" comment....

I thought he said "this team is clearly better" meaning better than the last time we played them.

Why was the quality so terrible?

Dave was just calling it like it was, AW and TB both threw some terrible passes last night. Just glad to get a win.

Bandwidth. Easy answer, it's like watching an early YouTube video (now some are nicer but they all used to be very grainy/blurry) vs a DVD, they might both have the same 480 lines of resolution, but the DVD had more bandwidth.

Longer: Every digital OTA channel has 19.2Mb/s total bandwidth to be broadcasting using MPEG2 compression. (I think 1080p Blu-Ray uses 54 Mb/s, 480P DVD used about 11Mb/s) That can either be used for one fairly nice 1080i/720p HDTV channel or some combination of "HD" and/or SD channel(s)

Adding subchannels takes away bandwidth from the main HDTV feed, so generally subchannels get minimum bandwidth to help out the HDTV feed. I've heard that the only acceptable HD/subchannel solution is 720p main and 480i sub. (like 19-1 ABC, 19-2 CW) because 720p can get by with less than the 19.2MB/s better than 1080i
WTVP is near hopeless running 47-1 1080i, 47-2 480i, and 47-3 480i even the main feed suffers from a lot of pixelation when any subject is moving, and the 480i sub channels are not setup with enough bandwidth for a fast motion sports event. Plus MPEG2 is not perfectly ideal for interlaced resolution vs progressive...

So why bother televising the game if it is going to look so bad?

That's what I heard also! I also like hearing their off-air comments. They are saying things the rest of say. One day I'd love to set of a conference call for these games instead of having to type what I feel in the chat. On second thoughts I'd probably say a lot worse things then Snell and Coach without man hands acting as a filter!

I knew it would not be very good when I first saw the assignment months ago. It's sorta better than nothing. I would not be against the Comcast feed showing up as a subchannel somewhere, just to make it more available to more viewers.
It seems improbable that WTVP also has a problem missing prime-time national programming. I thought TV provided a higher level of detail than channelsurfing (BU.tv?) it was amusing seeing the opposite camera angles..

Hopefully we can get to the point where someone wants to show more of our games in HD, though...
