Something a fellow fan and I were debating while planning our exit strategy from Redbird on Saturday, and something I've heard from those connected inside the program. Does our coaching staff work to develop individual players skill sets or do they work to mold the player to fit the system?
To me, it appears that regardless of a player's abilities and tendencies, our focus is on turning them into a player that can run the system rather than getting the most out of thier abilities. Don't get me wrong, I understand that every successful college program and coach has a system or identity for the way their teams play. However, it would appear that our system, specifically the high pick and roll, small-ball, 3-point, no post system is limiting our success. A school like Bradley also doesn't have the luxury of recruiting players that naturally fit their system, they have to take the best available players that want to play here. Michigan St. can recruit guys that specifically fit their style of play and assemble a well balanced roster capable of running Izzo's system, we cannot.
Running a less structured, free flowing offense would allow us to make better use of our athletes and paly more to our strengths. If I have to watch one more Egolf pick 30 feet from the basket that leads to nowhere, or even worse a good screen and show at the top of the key where the guard takes 3 dribbles without looking for the roll, I'm going to scream.
