  • BU's coaching challenge

I rarely start threads. It's just easier to jump on the ones you guys start

And I don't want this to be a bashing kind of deal either....

Here's the challenge I see coming for JL......

Who knows what happens the rest of the year. JL isn't in danger of his job this year at all barring some sort of catastrophe or incident.
But if we faulter the rest of the way and end up in the bottom half of the MVC then I could see him being on the hotseat somewhat next year especiallly with a new AD and the President here.

The challenge is how does JL find a top asst if he's on the hotseat?
Anyone who has aspirations of a head coaching job wouldn't take it and there very few CB types who are toward the end of a career who aren't already established somewhere else.
I'm not anti any current assts. like some are but we still need an experienced asst on the staff. It looks like we will have talent on the floor but that's only about 60% of the issue of having a good to great team IMO.
I'm just curious to see how JL handles this situation......depending on what happens it could be very tough to hire a top quality asst.

wow....I got gabby all of a sudden

I think we need a top notch recruiter that can get some Chicago recruits, there are a lot of very good basketball players up in that area and we get very few of them.

I rarely agree with the Score's B&B, but I do agree with their laughing at anyone that thinks DePaul's next coach must recruit Chicago well. They basically said, "Why would you want a connection with the cesspool of corruption that is known as Chicago recruiting." Actually recruiting Chicago is easy, just bring money, big bags of money. Basically if you want a coach that recruits Chicago, you want corruption.

Even if DePaul and the Big East could get away with it, BU can't. Because, if BU is interested at keeping the NCAA away, then it is probably best to keep away from Chicago recruiting (other than the few obvious gets like a son of a former BU player, SM or a castaway like Tony B.)

Some top Assistants may look at this situation as a chance to be the next head coach. Say he comes this summer and Les is fired at end of next season, then that Assistant may have a good chance of becoming the next head coach. Or it may be a good 1 year stepping stone for a different assistant.

Maybe....but you don't see that happen. JL chooses the coach and I doubt they would get the job if something happened to JL..

I dont think he has that good of chance I guess

I don't think we need Chicago recruiting. It is known for being dirty for the most part... I think our recruiting is okay or even maybe good. We have several regions we recruit well, so I'm okay without Chicago. I want the stereotypical tough, Xs and Os, gruff, dirty old b*st*rd type bench leader to help Jim out. Mix Dennis Hopper from Hoosiers with the super-cliche mean old assistant in Glory Road, and that's sorta what I'm thinking. That or Big Bisch. He'd (or equivalent) would be fine. I'd also accept Kevin Eastman, however unlikely.

Do you think Chicago is not corrupt? Do you not think there was a reason BW initially tried to avoid aligning himself with WWW?

..although growing up closer to Waukegan than Chicago, I tend to think the "Chicago recruiting corruption" statement means Chicago Public league more than the surrounding area, although I'm sure AAU has blurred that line in the past 20 years...

I would be willing to bet that Bruce Weber is one of the most honest coaches in the country.

There are "legal" ways to reward AAU and high school coaches, such as coaching gigs at the U of I camps, and subscribing to "recruiting services" owned by the Chicago guys.
I don't think Weber cheats or breaks rules. But he is clearly doing something different the last 2-3 years than he did the first few years when he couldn't get any decent Illinois kids.

Dick Versace recruited Chicago and look at the players and teams he had because of it, do not bring up the NCAA violations as they were minor compared to what goes on elsewhere plus they involved a player out of Cairo, Ill. which is not even near Chicago,.

You are right, but today's recruiting is much different than it was 20-30 years ago. Back then, a coach could outwork big school coaches and land a star player. Now with all the recruiting rules, and the influence the big schools have with their connection to ESPN and TV networks, that's not likely to happen.
