a talent question?

when i look at our team i see some very talented players. with that being how would you compare our talent to the rest of the valley teams. what separates us from say northern iowa? the big guy? how about the rest of the league?

do we need more talent to be a legitimate contender for a conference title? jus trying to figure what we need to go over the hump and not be a middle of the pack average team. would like to hear others thoughts on what we need to get better.

At first we were told 'facilities', but we've had NBA players here without them. We built facilities, and then we got guys who cited 'facilities' as why they came here, and we're still bad. So either the players aren't good enough, or they are good enough and something else is missing. Draw your own conclusions.

i look at uni. outside of the big guy and i think we have just as much talent.

We have some good D1 talent but we do not have depth. I truely thought going into this season we were going to be deep atleast 9 off of the bench deep.

In reality we have 1 very good sub in DSE, 1 evolving in maturation of game and body in Eastman and 1 who knows what you will get sub in EM. And that is it, unless you want to count the spotty minutes from a 6th year player. Other then that we get zero off of our bench.

Unless you have starting 5 talent like Kansas you need more quality depth all over the court. I am very worried about who will move into the minutes that Roberts gives... there are bodies but not athletic 3/4 bodies.

Our starters outscored Creightons last night 61-45. Dse is the only player on the bench that can contribute scoring , Eastman plays tough but does not shoot the ball well for a 6-4 guard, Thompson is a bust, Milos is more of an outside shooter which does not fit our system, Singh scores very little, McCain is not a good shooter.
I posted this about having o recruits committed for next year and yes we will have Prosser and Dunson but we need another 6-7 substitute for Taylor that can play.

While I believe games like last night prove we do not have anything close to any "overlooked but great players that should be first team MVC" If we had any of those first true first teamers, we would not of been in that sort of a "funk" at home.

I do not understand the "facilities" statement. We do not have facilities, OK we have "virtual" facities on a DVD some computer generated images in a recruiting guide and are using a temorary place to practice...
Last year we demoed our facilities and the new facilities are currently under construction.

We have talent, they just have to know how to play together. It's like in the NBA, you can have the highest payroll but that doesn't equal success. Have to have the coaching and they have to be able to play together.

I think we have talent about 6 or maybe 7 deep, and I think that's our biggest problem. We have absolutely no serviceable depth. DSE is our only bench player who consistently gives very good minutes, and the only one who scores. Eastman shows some stuff (and some very bad stuff at times), but he's not scoring yet. Knezevic has disappeared, AT completely so. Whatever's wrong with Singh is wrong with Singh. Starter-wise, the back-to-form Maniscalco has been playing great, TB and AW are all-MVC type players, WE is coming along very nicely, and CR is a plus defender and competent offensive contributor. I would take our starting 5 against any in the league... The problem invariable comes whenever we have to substitute someone and at the end of games. I'm frequently frustrated with Coach Les' substitutions, but if I ask myself who's he going to put in, there's no particularly good answer.

That said, this team (like last year's team) is NOT a good outside shooting team. For a Les team to be successful we must have good outside shooters. We must have a good post player (which Egolf is becoming) who is a scoring threat and draws a double team and who can kick the ball back out to an open shooter....... Who in turn must make his shot.

FWIW, in the MVC season, we're tied for 2nd in 3pt %, with .365... and we're 9th in the league in 3 pt attempts, ahead of only Evansville. We are not chucking up threes this season.

That's true. It's because they know they can't shoot. Unfortunately, they can't consistently hit the 10-15 footer either.

Well, the numbers seem to indicate they can shoot, don't they? .365 as a team is good. Warren's shooting .478, Roberts .382, and SM .353. I'd be comfortable with any of those guys taking an open 3... Well maybe not SM, he only ever seems to hit the ridiculous out of control fall away off the dribble shots. Maybe they're not chucking them up enough?
