Just got home and turned on ESPN and watched Outside the Lines inside report. I caught it in the middle, and I'm not sure exactly what the main subject matter was, but it talked about mid and low majors in college basketball and what they expect and if it is realistic. It also talked about coaches being fired mid-season and talked to a lady that I believe was the Depaul athletic director. They tied in coaches being fired with programs possibly expecting too much success too fast which I think was the main point of the show. It was talking about how mid and low majors think they can all be Gonzaga or Butler, cause if they can do it so can we type deal. It talked about how many Ivy League coaches have even been fired as well cause of this. It also talked about how hard it is to rise even in a league like the Big East from the bottom as well with the Depaul lady and Jim Boeheim saying it is because of all the teams you have to go through. The Depaul lady said they're expectations for the future coach are to make it back to tourny and finish in the top half the Big East. It also talked about how everyone in a program has to be invested in it, has to have a vision, and be on the same page, meaning the AD, the President, and the coach.
I thought this was an interesting topic to this board. We are thought of as "mid-majors", and I know many people, myself included, hope we can rise to a top level like one of those programs like Gonzaga. I know a lot of people have compared us to those programs when complaining about our progress being to slow. When I and others have said this is a process, some have said how long should the process be, saying others haven't taken this long and such.
This report has basically said they are the exception not the rule, and that everybody has to get on the same page with a long term vision for mid-major programs to build success gradually to the point of a Gonzaga....or in other words it is a long term process. But coaches get fired a lot because fans expect to rise too fast these days. Now Bradley is a team that has a great basketball history even compared to a lot of "major schools", has better fans, has a former NBA player for a coach, and is in a good college town, which is a lot more than most "mid-majors." Also I would consider the MVC, MWC, A10, and maybe a couple other leagues to be slightly above the lable "mid-major" and right below "major", BUT it is still a process to get back on top, and fans need patience even in big leagues.
Despite what some think about ALL of the last 4 years, I believe we have an still our making gradual progress throughout the JL era and look to have a bright future, and without a lot of recent injuries we might have made even more recent progress. Plus like the show said, you aren't just going to be able to find another coach who is just going to miraculously raise the program anyway.
Thought it was an interesting topic that related a lot to us.
