  • Nicholls State gets homered!

In the Southland Conference. one of the worst cases of home cooking ever as Northwestern State edges Nicholls State 99-98 in 2 OT. However, with the score 98-94 in the closing seconds, a Nicholls State player hits a layup, gets fouled, and makes the free throw, supposedly making the score 98-97. But the score never changes on the scoreboard...with it still showing 98-94. Play is finally stopped after a Nicholls State foul, and after a lengthy discussion, they add 2 points to make it 98-96. But 3 points should have been added! Northwestern State then misses 2 free throws and commits a foul. Nicholls State hits both to make it 98-98 on the scoreboard, but it should have been 99-98 Nicholls State.

Then on the final possession, a Northwestern State player drives into the lane, pushes off a defender, and then moves into another defender as he puts up a shot that misses badly. But somehow a foul is called on Nicholls State, and Northwestern State hits 1 of 2 free throws with 1.2 seconds left to win 99-98. Keep in mind the actual score even now should be 99-99.

The combination of losing a point, and the foul at the end of the game, makes it one of the worst homer jobs ever in my opinion. Expect to hear more about this eventually, as the Nicholls State coach did not look happy knowing that they still lost a point.

Which is a good reason why someone should be keeping a seperate tally on paper in case of a scoreboard error. I thought they did that in the first place anyways. I mean what if the scoreboard loses power?

I think someone was, because they were going over a manual sheet at the scorer's table. But I'm thinking even the guy keeping the manual stats missed the made free throw or something.

It's interesting that two years ago, Northwestern State lost a game in overtime against Iowa State, and it was discovered later that Northwestern State had gotten shorted a point earlier in that game. So I guess they are even now since this one went in their favor.

I was just flipping through the channels and found this game on Full Court, so I watched the end of it...a bit more eventful than I figured it would be. The TV announcers were still giving the score the scoreboard showed right after it happened, but they then quickly corrected themselves saying that the "guys in the truck" say the score is actually 98-97, which it should have indeed been...not 98-96 that they eventually put on the board after a several minute delay.

That would never happen at BU as we have the 2 best crews in the Missouri Valley. Men's and Women's.
