  • How desperate are schools for big men?

Desmond Hendrix is a 6'10" center who will be a sophomore at Wabash Valley junior college, Hickman, Kentucky, this year. According to the articles below, Bradley had been recruiting him, but he has narrowed his top 5 choices to LSU (his leader after visiting there this past weekend), UNLV, Wyoming, Cincinnati, and Pitt. Illinois and Purdue have begun to show recent interest. He apparently has eliminated schools like Indiana, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Bradley. (according to the articles below).
What amazes me is that this kid only averaged 5.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last year. Here is the best his coach could say about him in the latest article--
"Very nice kid, works hard. The thing that he is going to have to do just based on watching a few pickup games is that he is going to have to assert himself more offensively."
He played high school ball at Carbondale, then transferred to Chicago Julian high school, and mostly rode the bench behind other big men Nyal Koshwal and Thijin Moses.
It sounds like if big men with such limited skills are being recruited by heavyweights like LSU, UNLV, Illinois, and Pitt, that it will be tough for Bradley to land anyone with the skills they need to help them.

Not just big men Eddie, but the battle for any talent goes on non-stop.
    Remember this guy?

    Jordan DeMercey?

He was an absolute unknown (this is the article's words not mine)
untill he played a couple good games at the AAU-fest in Las Vegas, then he got several offers, now he's going to the ACC.
(and he didn't even play HS ball last season!)
He is listed as a 6'6", 180 lb SF, rated #13 in Georgia, with only 3 other players that are ranked behind him even having any major offers.

It is the same story over and over, that they'll jump at the chance to be the 10th, 11th, or 12th player on an ACC team, but will never consider the chance to be a potential star at a midmajor.

Is this the kind of recruiting battle we will see for local big men Jeremy Ball or for Shang Ping?
