    Cliffs Notes Version -

DV and the NCAA did NOT get along. BU got shafted for an at-large in 1982, and DV basically said what all of us say when a mid-major gets shafted, except he said it really loud and really publicly and not real tactfully (I loved it but it didn't help us or any other mid-major's cause). So, they were ready to hammer him at their first chance. Anyways, a few years later BU had some pretty minor violations that BU lied about and tried to cover up. As in most cases, the cover up is worse than the crime. The NCAA was going to hammer us real bad if DV didn't leave, so he gave a pompous speech, left for the NBA, and we got slapped with no TV/no postseason for a year. The NCAA has a long memory, and basically they'll be opening up a field office in the Markin Center if DV ends up back with the program.

Haha well now I feel ignorant about Bradley history. I knew something happened but I never really did any digging to figure it out. Thanks BB

        Who knows

I have no idea, but a guess for me would be at Notre Dame with Eddie Mathews. I just picture him at his age being more interested in the fun of coaching and not the pressure of division 1 basketball.

I remember going to the Fieldhouse to watch the drawings for the pairings. I thought they weren't through yet when the Braves weren't called. Everyone was stunned and the Fieldhouse was never so quiet. Dick told it like it was and had every right to complain loud and publicly. Who cares how tactful it was or wasn't. He told it like it was and that will always get you in trouble. If DV ever decides to come back to Bradley, I'd be all for it.
          IMO, he saved Bradley basketball.

He was 100% correct in everything he said. I just said it didn't help us.

There is no doubt he saved us. It may have been 30 years ago, but it just shows what the right hire can do for a program.

I agree with both of you guys. Had DV been able to stay BU would be Gonzaga, Memphis St. (without the Calipari corruption) and Butler.

I don't think DV was staying much longer anyways. He had bigger things on his mind, and who could blame him? The fact that he's found his way back I think is a testament to just how special this place can be.

Think I should clarify that when I said I wouldn't mind if DV came back to Bradley, I wasn't suggesting replacing Coach Les. I'm behind Jim 100%.

Bradleybrave you are incorrect. I'd have to brlieve that the NCAA would not mind that DV would be a part of college basketball with his NBA pedigree. For one thing DV has not benn on their backs like other past coaches.

First, it's an opinion so it's neither nor correct nor incorrect. Second, I have been told by people closer to things than I am that the NCAA would not look kindly on DV rejoining the BU coaching staff.

Since when does 'NBA pedigree' have anything to do with college basketball?

Branding! The NCAA loves the connection that they are the pathway to the NBA!

Maybe the NCAA is willing to bury the proverbial hatchet if DV's only going to be an assistant. I hope so... They owe us a couple and I'd love to se some DV defensive genius feeding our team next season.

It'd be great if Versace could join the staff If he does, hopefully someone would unofficially get the blessing from the NCAA ahead of time rather than risk further issues with them.

                                Versace

Forget the NCAA. How about the hard line taken by BU administration(s) for transgressions of the past. And their felt need to remain squeaky clean.

I'd love to see it happen though.
