Ordinarily this wouldn't be news for our forum, except in this case, it makes it much less likely that Iowa State coach Gregg McDermott will continue to pursue John Wilkins.

They were already at the limit for scholarships for 2010, but it is expected that Craig Brackins will not return for his senior season, thus it was a foregone conclusion that McDermott would try to sign one more recruit, a post player, for 2010--

I am impressed with how many "under the radar" big kids he finds and "lands"...now he has a bunch of them, and even if he still had a scholarship,
I can't imagine he'd take yet another long-shot chance on another untested, unproven kid who is getting offers from only mid-majors...and go after Wilkins.
Most of all the big recruits he has landed other than Brackins have been pretty obscure, 2-Star or 3-Star at best, and many smiply don't pan out..
McD had Clayton Vette, Jordan Dykstra, Justin Hamilton, Jamie Vanderbeeken, LA Pomlee, Clinton Mann, Laron Dendy, now Jordan Railey..
beating out almost exclusively smaller mid-majors to get those guys.

Just my opinion based on what I have heard, but I think that the ISU staff liked how Railey was progressing and did not get a good feeling abut Wilkins ever being able to play D1 ball so they decided to offer last week. Time will tell if it was a wise decision.

It has been disappointing that a very good big man coach like McDermott has not been able to land some bigger names, but Hamilton was a solid find and Railey looks more athletic and mobile than Ham. Vanderbeeken is very good at what he does, stretch the defense and nail threes. Pomlee was a project and we knew it which is why he redshirted, but time will tell if he ever is a Big 12 caliber player. Vette looked to me like he was going to be very good but he opted out. Mann was a mistake.
