  • Bob Knight Trashes John Calipari

    Chair chucking choker chides cheater

btw-- of all the high school All Americans and great players and great scorers that he recruited and who played at IU,
name one who played more than a year or two under Knight, who had a nice NBA career and averaged more than 10 ppg?

and what was the latest GSR (Graduation Success Rate) & Federal Graduation Rate at Texas Tech that covered Bob Knight's players?
Could the 22% be right? I thought he always graduated his players?

While I know you said 10 ppg as a benchmark, most of these players are close to that. I think the definition of a "nice NBA career" is playing more than four or five years. There are actually five players that specifically meet the 10 ppg. requirement. Here's a list of his players that I think had a nice NBA career. There are many more that played less than 7 years in the NBA.

        Kent Benson 10 yrs. 9.1
        Quinn Buckner 10 yrs. 8.2
        Calbert Cheaney 13 yrs. 9.5
        Alan Henderson 12 yrs. 7.8
        Jared Jeffries 7 yrs. 5.3
        Scott May 7 yrs. 10.4
        George McGinnis 11 yrs. 20.2
        Isaiah Thomas 13 yrs. 19.2
        Bobby Wilkerson 7 yrs. 10.1
        Mike Woodson 11 yrs. 14.0
        Randy Wittman 9 yrs. 7.4

Love him or hate him what did he say so wrong about Calipari? I'm not a BN fan but his programs were 100% clean.

Agreed. If there's one guy around with the street cred to bash Calipari, it's definitely Coach Knight.

Coach Knight was never investigated for cheating and I may not agree with some of the tings he did I still respect him for coming out and telling the truth about Calipari and his getting 2 schools put on probation because of cheating yet he gets more money and continues on without any sanctions for him. Knight at least has stirred the pot and if anybody can be a good spokesman for doing something to clean up college basketball and all the cheating I would bet on him.

perhaps he never got caught, but neither did Tark! (although everywhere Tark was had trouble...)

                  but as for disturbed's list....

--Isiah got out before he played very long under Bobby Knight, so that was kinda my point...he didn't play very long under the General..

--Benson and all the rest who are at 10 and under.....that's again my point...where did the scoring ability go on all those guys?
Basically Kent Benson's stats are similar or considerbly less impressive than Billy Paultz or Steve Hawes...not names that are oft-spoken at the HOF.

--Woodson's the only one substantially over 10 ppg..but still hardly known as more than a decent journeyman.

--and nice try on McGinnis...but Big George was gone from IU before Bobby ever coached a game.

--I am making no comments about RMK and his coaching...I will leave that for you...
but of the dozens, and dozens of All-Americans, and top recruits he hauled in, top scorers, kids who were legendary....kids who many other programs wanted...
How come not one (except Isiah) went on to much more than a decent or mediocre pro career? That's all I ask....what happened to them that their scoring ability was forever hampered after playing for Bobby?
Comparable coaches like Coach K, Dean Smith, etc....no comparison..

and Isiah, like I said, got out before he was ruined, too......

He won national championships and won more games than any other coach in NCAA history. Are you seriously questioning Knight's coaching ability based on what his players did in the NBA? Did the chair he threw hit you in the head?

I don't really care what Bobby says about others. He did get quite a bit out of his teams.

Comparing how his players do in the pros has zero to do with defining a college coach's career IMO

If anything, it shows just how great of an "x's and o's" coach he was. I would argue that he amost always had average to below-average players that he usually molded into a great team. I'm sure great players like Isaiah probably hated his system because (like Coach K and Dean Smith) team play often leads to lower individual stats.

I think Coach Knight was a great coach -- one of the best ever (time passed him by at the end of his career like so many other great coaches). He was, however, a real @$$hole of a human being.
