  • MVC Injury Reports

We are only about a month away from the start of the 2006-2007 college basketball season.
It all begins one minute after 11:59PM on Friday, October 13.
Some schools are doing a Midnight Madness, but I suspect BU will have their first practice on Saturday, October 14.

I just read a couple reports, here is what has been said about the Valley teams and their recent injuries.

Creighton-- Ty Morrison is currently being treated for hyperthyroidism. The forms of treatment vary from medicines to possibly surgery if the meds don't work.
Sometimes the meds that are used (thyroid activity blockers, beta blockers) do have a noticable effect on slowing metabolism and can affect athletic performance.
He apparently has not yet returned to playing basketball.
Creighton also had injuries to point guard Josh Dotzler, who underwent surgery and is rehabbing. There are some reports that he may not be ready for the start of the season but will likely be able to get back by the conference part of the season.
Nate Funk's recovery from surgery is reportedly going well.
He had surgery for a recurring tear in his left rotator cuff. Reports are that he is doing well and will be ready for the start of the season which is just a month away. It is sometimes difficult to get back full mobility from this kind of injury and surgery, especially for a pure shooter.

Drake-- returning guard Nick Grant played some in the offseason with a touring team of college kids who competed against some amateur teams in Denmark and Sweden.
It is the same team that Illinois' Chester Frazier played on.
In one of the games, Nick Grant suffered a dislocated shoulder.
No word yet on how severe.

Indiana State- Trent Wurtz isn't suffered a concussion and head injury that required 12 stitches and a stay in the hospital.
Jay Tunnell has a knee injury and hasn't been able to play either. He had surgery for the injury and may end up redshirting.
Mick Yelovich also suffered a concussion during the practices and has seen his playing time limited.
They have also lost Eric Gray who is no longer part of the team, and has been dismissed.

I haven't heard anything about any of the present Bradley players. If anyone does hear a report, let us know.

I talked to Nick about 2 weeks ago, and he has been given clearance to resume his normal weightlifting, shooting, conditioning, etc. I don't think the injury was as severe as initially feared.

Again? That guy has been on and off the team every year he's been there. I imagine it's permanent this time.

Isn't Singh supposed to miss the first part of the season?

Last I heard was that they were aiming for the beginning of November to start playing on the court. And maybe end of December to begin competetion.

Creighton juco transfer Ty Morrison is considering redshirting. He has been picked by some preseason mags as the top incoming player this year in the MVC, but he has been suffering with Graves disease (hyperthyroidism)

This is a very tough break for Morrison, but it seems to fit right along the line of what's been discussed, that several of the TOP schools like Missouri, Gonzaga, Arizona, etc. who were tracking and offering Morrison, dropped their interest, and his performance in his sophomore juco season fell way off.
Once he was listed as the #1 juco player in the nation and by the end of his soph season, some sites didn't even have him in the TOP 40. This unfortunate disease may have already been affecting him then.

That Omaha article is a subscription article, but I can get it,
and it goes on to say a bunch that is interesting.

It says that Morrison is way behind on conditioning, fatigues very easily, and he wants to redshirt.

But it interviews coach Dana Altman about this, and he says that he wants Morrison to play, and that Morrison was "brought in here" to play this season.

Now there are some really weird comments on the Bluejay message board about Morrison such as,
"I can not recall a single incident where a player and Dana had any dispute in the newspaper. Bizarre"
"I wish he would have picked the Zags"

The article also goes on to talk about Josh Dotzler. It says he is working out but has yet to even begin any full scrimmages, and isn't allowed to do anything involving the possibility of contact.

Junior guard Pierce Hibma, who should be in line to get some decent backup minutes this year, has also been injured. He is "being held out of practice indefinitely" because of a leg injury. It might just be a bruise, but he even has trouble negotiating "a flight of stairs at the Vinardi Athletic Center."

Creighton has a public scrimmage next Monday night.

The poster who said "I wish he would have picked the Zags" lives in Spokane.....home of the Zags....so I wouldn't read too much into that comment. He's likely a Creighton grad who is a Gonzaga season ticket holder.

Southern Illinois freshman Josh Bone who was expected to help with outside shooting is out 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. Tough luck. This is the second Saluki player sidelined with a major injury. Redshirt freshman Chris Cornelius is out with a major knee injury.

It's because they are so good and so deep that they are a walk to win the Valley and get their 6th consecutive NCAA bid, as we've been told by all the bandwagon SIU fans?

By the way, the school has well over 20K students, and they've been this awesome NCAA team since the 1990's, so surely they must be outdrawing all the other Valley teams, right?

Nope...they have a 10,200 seat arena, and could probably fit 11,000 in if the demand was there.
instead....here is their awesome attendance record...
                      2000-2001 -- 4,000
                      2001-2002 -- 6,000
                      2002-2003 -- 6,500
                      2003-2004 -- 6,000
                      2004-2005 -- 6,700
                      2005-2006 -- 7,000

Even in their very worst year in the past 50 years, Bradley has never drawn only 6000-7000 fans.
They haven't had an actual full house in years.
