  • MVC Player of the Week & Newcomer of the Week

Kwadzo Ahelegbe wins the POW for the 2nd time already this season...he has a leg up on the POY.
Also - he is the 3rd consecutive UNI player to win it (last wk. was Eglseder) - so is there something going on??

Newcomer of the Week is a senior...Tony Freeman...

The NOW went to SIU's Tony Freeman, mainly on the basis of his Dec. 9 game against lowly SEMO in which Freeman scored 26.
He had a good game, but in a game that was a 25-35 point blowout well before the end of the first half, Freeman was still in there launching 3's.
Half his points were scored after SIU had a 26 pt lead. Personally, not taking anything away from a nice shooting performance, but I think
the award should have gone to someone whose efforts were not so inflated by the woefulness of the competition!

The guy did hit 10 of 17 threes on the week for 59% and 14 of 22 from the field for 64% while only committing 3 turnovers. His fifteen first half points on incredible 3 point shooting were a huge reason SIU had that big of a lead in the first place. It was nice to see him break out a little as he is starting to look like the really good player we had all hoped he was going to be. Bad competition? sure. Great performances? definitely. I think he deserves some credit if nobody else put up similar numbers against better schools (not saying they didn't- havn't checked...).

          Here's an oddity....

in the Big Ten, Northwestern has lost its only two games this week, yet one of their players still gets the Player of the Week award. Congrats to John Shurna.

ps-- Northwestern gets ranked for the first time in decades, then promptly loses their next two....oh well......
