for example, how does a team go 7-0 and still have an RPI of 140?
Because of a horribly bad schedule that ranks about 340+, and that's confident enough to take to the bank.
The one difference is there's one more major shift to come: conference play starts. Especially if you schedule good teams from low major teams (say, a SWAC or MEAC favorite), they'll pile up a bunch of conference wins and improve their overall records, and your SoS by comparison.

I'd say I'm about 75% comfortable with the current RPIs and SoSs.

This is really shocking, any particular reason the league as a whole is down this season? The Pac 10 as a whole has decent weather yr round, nice campuses and usually good teams. Can't see why enough good recruits wouldn't want to go play out west.

Good question. Here a few things but I'm sure there is more. There has been a bit of coaching transition of late USC, Arizona, Stanford all usually good programs. UCLA???? they are young but supposedly good recruits. Then there are just the up and down of any conference and it just seems all the things that could go wrong have gone wrong.

Honestly? I just don't think the Pac-10 is as good in general as the othr 5 BCS conferences. I follow it pretty closely now that I live out here in AZ. (also known as sports fan purgatory... NO ONE here knows sports) I have season tix to AZ football, and a Pac-10 package for BBall, so I see a lot of Pac-10. And the Pac-10 just isn't that good in the major sports. I think they get close to swept this year in bowls, and don't expect much of anything from them in the NCAA. The MVC a couple of years ago was easily better than the Pac-10 is now. I long for those days...

Amp you are wrong! Pac 10 is pretty good football conference:

            Oregon
            OSU
            Stanford
            USC

Would all arguably have won the Big X this year. USC came in 4th and beat OSU in Columbus!

Baseball they are usually a top flight conference.

The fans out west are not into college sports as much but the nice weather and out door activities may have something to do with it.

Come on man! U of A beat both USC, Stanford, and OrSU and got smoked by Iowa! The Pac-10 hardly had any good out of conference wins, save USC over OSU. I would like to say they're better, but I expect O to lose to OSU, U of A to lose to Nebraska, Stanford to lose to UOk...

Amp - I guess we will just have to see. I believe Oregon will smoke OSU and Stanford will beat Oklahoma.

I'll have to look it up but the Pac 10 has a pretty good bowl record these last few years. Top to bottom this year IMO the Pac 10 was better then the Big 10. I liked Iowa and they proved that they were a good team with the win over PSU but they would have finished in the middle of the Pac 10 this year.

On the bottom side of the conference Cal smoked Min @ Min!

How do you qualify this? Like I said, they smoked U of A who beat all the major players except Oregon, and finished 2nd in the Pac-10. Make no mistake, I don't think U of A is good, but they are better than OrSU and Stanford. Iowa would have likely been #1 in the Pac-10 this year. As their ranking suggests.

You keep throwing in Arizona like they are the pall bearers of the Pac 10, they were tied for 2nd with Oregon State and Stanford, better then them is very questionable and better then USC?. USC smoked OSU at OSU and they finished 5th in the Pac 10. Who finished 1st in in the Big X? not Iowa! They are not even heading to the Rose Bowl.

Let's agree to follow this conversation up after the Rose Bowl.

Well, AZ beat USC... Argue all you want thats the only objective way to determine whos better(there is a circle, I'll give you that. U of A>USC>OSU>Iowa>U of A). Same goes for U of A beating Standford, and OSU. I throw around U of A because I saw everyone of their games save ASU and they were 2nd in the Pac-10 and have a Big Ten opponent.

Watch the RPI numbers of those 2 teams sink like a rock in conference play. No one may survive with a top 50 RPI. A power conference where no team is top 50 RPI. This is actually in play.
Digging up an old thread - and not picking on you TAS. Just using you as a starting point for discussion.

Just wanted to point out the PAC10 is now 6th in Conference RPI Ranks (ahead of the B10 who is 7th - but the B10 is the best since they finally won the ACC/B10 Challenge - LOL, j/k).

I know: Conferences don't get bids - teams do. Unless you are in a BCS-Conference... then it's ok to get more bids based on being in a BCS Conference.

Now how are they getting this high an RPI, based solely on their non-conference SOS? Even so, they haven't beaten any of the good teams they played. But I guess their high SOS will feed into two or even three bids.

Still, this conference hit rock bottom when a bad Illinois-Chicago team beat Oregon St. a couple of weeks ago!

Well, they're finally starting to win a few games they shouldn't. I'll be shocked if the Big Televen doesn't overtake them back, though.

I think Washington is good enough to get an at-large on merits, so odds are we'll see 2 bids.
