  • The MVC/MWC Challenge

Thus far the Mountain West holds a 2-1 lead in this year's Challenge..

here are my thoughts on the remaining games and who I expect to win them...

    2009 MVC/MWC Challenge Series
11/13/09 Bradley at BYU - BYU won 70-60
11/20/09 Colorado State at Indiana State - InSU won 65-60
11/21/09 Southern Illinois at UNLV - UNLV won 78-69

now the games yet to be played...
12/05/09 Air Force at Missouri State - I pick MSU to win by 15
12/12/09 TCU at Wichita State - I pick Wichita to win by 12
12/19/09 Creighton at New Mexico - UNM's schedule thus far has been really soft, so I expect the Jays to surprise them by 4
12/19/09 Illinois State at Utah - sadly I expect ISU to get thumped as they play their only real challenge on the non-conference road
12/22/09 San Diego State at Drake - Drake will lose this one but it'll stay close
12/23/09 Wyoming at Northern Iowa - UNI will not lose to Wyoming on their own home court

Thus I see the Valley winning this series 5-4

    "Sadly?"........
c'mon T. If ISU gets thumped at Utah, you'll be anything but "sad" about it. Whether it hurts the Valley or not.......you are celebrating any ISU loss and a "thumping" is cause for a kegger.

    be honest
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

It's sad that the administrator of this site receives gratification bashing a group of college kids. While I am excited by the BU win over the U of I...by no means do i feel that BU has won the NCAA Tournament like Tornado. It was one favorable victory in a long season. I hope the team feels different and treat the U of I victory as though.

bufan, show me even one post I have made that suggests BU won the NCAA tourney...
quite the opposite...I am cautiously optimistic..
In fact, in the 7-page thread about the BU win over Illinois, here is just about my only real comment..
"makes me wonder how good BU can be if we actually put it all together and play a really good game!"

Kinda looks a bit different that what you seem to claim I said...

So maybe you'd care to retract your inane comments...
But bash away....as you are wrong on numerous levels...

I never bash college kids...and there are exceedingly few teams that I don't pull for..
and I am not administrator of this site..
so maybe go back to ground zero and try again, since you didn't get much correct in your post.

The Pit is a .... errrr.... used to be a tough place to win at. If 16000 howling fans are there, it won't be easy.

Steve Alford has the unique ability to drive fans away from a program in as little as 3 years! Except for his success at SMSU (although my only distinct memory is Kevin Ault's infamous brick-brick on 2 FTs to win the game against BU at Carver around 1997), Alford has underachieved, sometimes drastically, nearly every single season over the past 10 years between Iowa and UNM.

              Sadly for The Valley.

Is it better or worse for this thing to stay pretty much at a 5-4 or 4-5 for the next couple of years? I would like to see this challenge going on for a long time as it's a good fun thing to have with another conference, but if they or us are constantly getting beaten in the series like 7-2 my guess is that it will end after this first contract.

At this point though it looks as if it will go 5-4 for either conference.

Other then UNI , the other top teams in the Valley all played on the road, the MWC must have picked these games, next year the Valley will dominate this event.

Danny, I think what tornado is saying is true. None of us want ISU to be losing in the non-conference portion of the season because it will drop the collective RPI of the conference down if they do, as when any other Valley team loses. I think the problem though is that god-awful schedule of theirs for the past three years.

As an honest question, maybe you can tell me why ISU is not making the effort to at least schedule up. And please don't tell me it's because no one wants to play them. That's a copout! Bradley, UNI, Creighton, MSU and Drake at the very least all have decent schedules. The others not great but still better than ISU's. If ISU can't get a BCS team or two onto their schedule, understood. But there is no reason why they have to load up on sub 250 type teams. At least they should go for some 75 to 150 rpi teams. That would help their strength of schedule big time!

For the record- tornado is not an administrator on this site, and he has never been an administrator here at any time since the site was started. So whereever you got this information, or maybe you just assumed it or made it up, it is 100% wrong.

tornado has served as a moderator in the past, but has not been a moderator for a long time. He is simply a poster here like everyone else, and is entitled to his opinion. BTW, where is anyone "bashing" kids?

But note that administrators and moderators are also entitled to post and have opinions. Is there something wrong with that?

There is nothing wrong with him having his own opinions. I know when I go to redbird sites and they are putting down the kids...i get a bad taste. I don't mind them putting our coach down because he is a paid employee...and i do that from time to time.

On the schedule. ISU will surprise a lot of people. They have big bodies, and probably more depth down low than most in the Valley. That scares me.

I think ISU has a very good team and should not have been (I don't know if this is the right word) scared to schedule up to at least with teams in the 75-150 range. Play a couple decent Horizon teams or good MAC teams (I know they have Central Mich and Ohio, but those are not real good MAC teams). What are they worried about? I'm sure they could have gotten a UW-Green Bay or someone of at least that caliber and still came out of the pre-conference season undefeated or close to it. At least they did not exempt themselves from the MVC/MWC challenge on the grounds they might have to play someone... Hey, but they got top 25 votes. Maybe if BU would have played two more cupcakes (instead of BYU and OK St--I know we had to play Ok St in order to get to ILL) while still having the Illinois win they could be undefeated WITH a quality win and garner some votes... Nah... I'm rambling. I'll stop.

You know what? ISU has a bad schedule. We know it. You know it. ISU's fans know it. Your mom knows it. EVERYONE KNOWS IT. It's been discussed and brought up constantly. It is what it is. You can't change it anymore.

It's not worth discussing because it isn't changing, and every possible point about the schedule has already been discussed. I think the message about the weakness of the schedule MAY have gotten across to everyone by now

I hereby suggest a moratorium of never discussing their schedule again, except when appropriate when talking about RPIs and at-large profiles.
