  • West Coast Conference the new mid-major power!

Look what Portland and San Diego have pulled off in non-conference play this year! I'd say there are about seven or eight non-BCS teams ahead of us in the NCAA Tournament "pecking order" so far, although our resume is in pretty good shape too. But these two teams (and Gonzaga as well) take the cake:

It's an oft-made statement: Just give the mid-major a chance on a neutral court. Portland got that chance at the 76 Classic -- and the Pilots have taken full advantage.

It's probably too early to think about pecking order among mid majors as opportunities will continue to flow in from all directions. But the WCC is the league that always seems to step up.

From a Bradley angle, we're still just 1-2 in big non-con oppurtunities, so I'm not sure we're quite top-10 mid-major resume right now.

It's true that it is still early. I remember Ball St. winning one of these tourneys about 8 or 9 years ago, knocking out several top 25 teams in the process. They then went on to stink up the place in MAC play, so yes, no one has punched their ticket to the Big Dance just yet. But these teams mentioned above will have a big advantage should they not win their conference.

And our one quality win, while no guarantee that it will earn us an at-large bid, is still better than the vast majority of mid-major teams out there now.
