  • Garrett Jones- Evanston HS

Anybody ever heard of him? I see he is only a junior. Sounds like he can shoot. Ben Brust scored 50 and wasn't the leading scorer in the game.

He is under the radar, and not profiled by many recruiting sites yet. But if he keeps scoring like that, everyone will know the kid.

Jones is a fine high school guard, junior PG at Evanston, who has had big scoring games before....as high as 36.....but will not get highly recruited because he's only 5-8.

He is the one on the left..

I do not know where you got the information that jones is 5'8, that is incorrect. In fact there is no one on Evanston's entire roster listed below 5'10 so thats just wrong. I got a chance to see every one of jones' games over the last two years including his 51 point explosion a week ago and feel like I can provide a good scouting report.
Jones is about 6'0 maybe 6'1 in shoes. He is a big muscular kid too especially in the upper body. He has a huge arsenal of offensive weapons. He can handle the ball comfortably with either hand, and while he can play either guard in HS, he will be a 1 in college, and dribbles well enough to hold his own. He is not a spectacular passer. His vision is not his strength. He does have very few turnovers however, as he always plays under control and limit his turnovers. His assist to turnover ration was +3 last year, even though he has very few of both.
Defensively Jones is not a special player. He does not have particularly good instincts and fails to breach passing lanes while in a zone, and lacks the speed to defend good d1 guards man to man, so he will have to rely on physicality which he may be strong enough to do. He finished second to last among regulars on the team in rebounding last year.
Offensively the kid is gifted. Not only gifted but he is a hard worker and has made remarkable improvements each of the last two summers. He has the first step to blow by high school defenders and that should carry over to college should he catch them napping. Once he gets that step, he effectively uses his body to seal the lane to the basket. As a lefty, he prefers attacking from the left side of the floor but as I said earlier is adept with both hands. Shooting is the kids' bread and butter. He can shoot off the dribble or catch and shoot. He is able to create his own shot and make difficult shot attempts look easy. He has NBA range right now, but perhaps his most effective shot is an 18 footer where he is almost automatic no matter how much pressure is put on him. If he had to, Jones could score 25 points EVERY NIGHT no matter who is guarding him.
I think a Northwestern type school would be a good fit. Their defense compensates for his faults, and his strengths work well in their offense. I expect him to end up at a lower half of the big 10 type school.
On a human level, Jones is as good of a kid as they come. He is humble, and legitimately nice. He is a great teammate to a fault. In the classroom Jones is a standout as well.

and actually coming into this year, Jones' career high was 28 set last January 24 against thornwood. I do no know if he scored 36 this year as there is one game I am unsure of his totals but I know this year he has posted totals of 27, 51, 32, and 11. If that 36 is from the fifth game from this year than you are correct, but otherwise that information is false. However most statistical info given to colleges is.

I got the height for Garrett Jones off his own MySpace page..
and it is confirmed by the listing in IHSA which obviously come to IHSA from his own school, Evanston High School.

I don't know when he updated his page, and I suspect he was 5-8 at that time...and the IHSA listing is from last year, but at least I have cited some credible references...

and we all know kids and their coaches, AAU coaches, and schools can tend to exaggerate heights...so who knows, really...

If you say he's 6-0, then it's possible, he may have grown...but most sites list him shorter,
Here's one local prep site that's generally pretty accurate, that has Jones listed at 5-10..
