  • Shockers Win First Preseason Exhibition Game!

The Wichita State Shockers are in Canada beginning a preseason exhibition tour.

Their first game was against Simon Fraser University
    in their Chancellor's Gymnasium.

The Shockers won 87-62 tho the "level of competition was cited as "not very good".
The Shox fell behind 15-11 early, then came back to tie it at 21-21.
From there, the shockers never lost the lead.
    Halftime score 48-32

The report states that only about 50-60 people were in attendance, 20-30 of whom were Shocker faithful.

Note--Wichita plays a second game tomorrow
against another team (British Columbia) but Simon Fraser actually plays a total of TWO games today against two different opponents (Wichita in the afternoon game then Fresno State later in the evening.
They then face perennial Top 20 team Arizona on Sunday.),
and so they clearly conserved their personnel, which may help to explain why they couldn't keep up after the first 10-15 minutes of the game.

Here are a few reports about the Wichita State personnel:

New guard Gal Mekel played well and shared point guard time with Matt Braeuer.
Two players were present but not suited up leading to speculation that one or more may redshirt:
Arbry Butler, JT Durley, both freshmen.

Chris Brown was not suited up in the first half but did suit up and play some in the 2nd half, reason unknown.

Wendell Preadom was described as not showing much improvement from last year.
David King, 6-10 freshman coming off a redshirt year was described as looking totally lost.

The starters who played fairly well were Sean Ogirri, Matt Braeuer, Ryan Martin, PJ Couisnard, and Kyle Wilson.
The starters did get good rest in the 2nd half.
Philip Thomasson, transfer from Colorado State looked good and will be a good addition.

Karon Bradley twisted his ankle, left the game and did not return.
That's one problem with scrimmages this early, the kids may not yet be in full playing condition.

Indiana State Sycamores play at University of Windsor at 7PM tonight.
Then Sunday, 3PM at Lambton, then Mon. 10AM at Guelph.

Wichita State plays its 2nd game Sun. September 3 at
10am - vs. University of British Columbia

Like the games when BU went to Canada, they really have a lot of trouble getting people interested in basketball this early. Tickets at Simon Fraser were only $10 but the attendance was easily counted in just a few dozen.

Here is the box score of the Wichita State - Simon Fraser game
Clearly the minutes played are incorrect, but we know how horribly inaccurate those guys were in keeping stats up there in Canada.

Perhaps the most surprising stat is Wichita getting outrebounded 38-25

I'd rather go see BU Women's for a lot cheaper than this.

These games show NOTHING of what to expect IMO.

after reading the title and all the coverage on this despite it is the first valley game of the year, do you think the mvc fans get along better and root for eachother more as a direct affect from last year's tourny?

Well, I wonder if this will be a trend, but look what they are doing over at Indiana University.

They are not only dropping the ticket price for women's games, they are eliminating it altogether.

While Purdue is averaging 7,000 per game for women's basketball, IU is averaging only 1300, 10th out of 11 teams in the Big Ten. So let's just let everyone in free to boost attendance!!

Wichita State played two games on Sunday.
In a 10AM start, they played a very good Canadian team, University of British Columbia.

Wichita won 72-66 in a very tough game.
The Shockers led by as much as 18 in the 1st half, but UBC caught up and stayed close the entire resd-t of the way.
It was tied with 12 minutes to go and was a 4 point game within the final 18 seconds.
UBC had the ball down four with 29 seconds to go, but couldn't get any closer.

Gal Mekel, the Shockers' highly touted freshman point guard had a little rougher time against this tougher opponent.
Gal's scoring plus his assists equalled his turnovers.
                  2 pt, 1 asst., 3 TO, 1-5 from the floor, 0-2 from 3-pt.

Wichita then played Trinity Western Univ. today, in the afternoon game,
and won 92-63 in a sloppy game that included lots of turnovers.

                  Starters:
                  Gal Mekel
                  Wendell Preadom
                  PJ Cousnard
                  Kyle Wilson
                  Phillip Thomasson

                  Wilson scored 20
WSU shot 57% and TWU shot 36%.
Shockers were 10-21, 47.6% from the FT line.

The Shockers return to the US on Monday.
