Coach K did nearly the same with the Duke starteres against UNCC in a game they won 101-59. The apologist ESPN announcers were making excuses as to why Coach K was leaving these players in so long. What a joke!

In fairness to Pearl, none of his starters/scholarship players played more than 23 minutes.

O&B, that may be true, but check the play-by-play. With 2:36 left, and with an 78 point lead (117-39) lead, he still had scholarship players in the game while there were walkons left on the bench who had not yet played.
At that point, he removed his last 2 scholarship players (Goins and Williams) and inserted the last 2 walkons (Hubert, Cannington) who show up with 3 minutes played in the box score. Incidentally, Tennessee launched several 3-point shots in the last 2 minutes with an 80+ point lead, and their last basket, a three pointer by walkon Hubert at 1:36 made the score 124-41 and broke the Tennessee all-time scoring record. Yipee!
It's his team, and he can do what he wants. But IMO, that shows a lack of sportsmanship to continue to run the ball and jack up 3-pointers at the end with an 80+ point lead. I think most coaches would not think of doing that.

I was watching a girls Jr. HS game the other day and I had to step out, but before I did I had to say something. (They were using the gym I work out in) It was right before 1/2 time and the score was 38-2 and the winning team was still using their starters and pushing the ball every chance. I told the coach, "Showing your girls some real class here?" They ended up winning 67 - 8! I came back later on and at least with 5 min. left she had her bench in. I do not understand this type of behavior from a coach at this level. I can see a college team using these games to test some things out but still no excuses to embarrass anyone.

It seems like a habit. Coaches NEVER put in walk-ons until well under the final media timeout. It's almost like an unwritten code that you never put in walk-ons until very late.

We are seeing this more and more now and I find this trend disturbing. My son's Jr. AAU team played in a National Qualifier in Rockford this summer and got drilled several times. Several scores from other games were in the 70-80 point range which made some parents upset. A team from Detroit defeated my son's team by 50 but their coach had some class and took his foot of the gas early on and they moved the ball around to burn clock and let every kid play. They were just that much better. They could have won by 90 easy.

One positive note, as this team was coming out for the tip, they all shook the hands of each ref. I guess once in awhile you find some good sports out there.

I am going to play devil's advocate a little bit here. All of these teams know what they may be getting themselves into when they sign the contract to play these bigger schools. Most of the time they are getting a significant sum of money to play. Most importantly, if you don't want to be beaten this badly PLAY SOME DEFENSE. I do not agree with leaving the scholarship players in when others have not played yet but for god sakes stop them from scoring it is not the opposing coaches job to keep it close. You always want your team to do their best and compete, if the other team can't keep up that is their problem.

I agree to a point but playing your starters for a long period of time during these blow outs still, is just not right. Then you have AAU and HS coaches who try to justify their behavior because of what happens at this level.
