Call it what you want, but Arkansas is not so tough that they won't have this happen to them sometime later in the season..
John Pelphrey has been getting hammered in the press for all the Arkansas kids who have been getting into legal troubles..
So he responds by letting his starters stay in the game right 'til the end, running and gunning and launching 3-pointers in a ridiculous display of poor sportsmanship.
Seriously, they're playing Alcorn - they had a 71-26 lead at halftime, and come out in the 2nd period with all their starters - including even one who they said was going to be suspended and try to run the score up as much as possible.
Their five starters (Farmer, Powell, Clarke, Noble, Washington) not only start the 2nd half but they play all the way until there is less than 5 minutes remaining and Arkansas has a 73 point lead!
But even their apologists have come up with what they think is an alibi for this sham, but in effect it simply exposes their selfishness...
they left these guys in to break records...
Clarke wanted to break the single game scoring record and the team wanted to break the team scoring record for the arena.
I am not kidding...check the play by play yourself...
note that at 5:49 Arkansas gets the ball on a turnover, then only about 15 seconds later...with 20 seconds remaining on the shot clock, Rotnei Clarke launches yet another 3-pointer to run up the score..
the kid has already by that point in the game launched 17 three pointers and has 51 points in the scorebook, so what is the kid shooting for?
Note even... the rest of the way...at 2:53...7 seconds into a new shot clock, Arkansas launches yet another 3-pointer to push the lead back up to 70!
I bet the coach is glad the kid nailed that one and finally put the game out of reach...
BUT - Arkansas was not done yet!!
The next seven shots come 18, 10, 2, 14, 5, 8, and 10 seconds into the respective shot clocks!
In fact from the point of their largest lead - a 73 point margin at 5:03, they ended up taking ten more shots.
That's 10 shots in 5 min (2 shots per min) - so it is quite clear they turned it on even when it was a 70+ margin and the other team had their deep subs in!
Pelphrey and hogs... I will be rooting against you the entire rest of the season.....
