  • Indiana State guard suspended by NCAA for 2 games

Dwayne Lathan, a 6'3" sophomore guard who transferred to Indiana State from Louisiana Tech has been suspended by the NCAA for the first two games of the 2009-10 season for participating in a non-sanctioned event while he was a freshman at Louisiana Tech.
Lathan was a participant in the spring of 2008, prior to his transfer to Indiana State, in an unsanctioned charity 3-on-3 basketball tournament. His participation in this event was deemed a violation of NCAA rules and the national office levied the two game suspension.
Lathan has started in the 2 exhibition games, and scored 11 points in the first game against Rose-Hulman, and was the leading scorer with 16 points Saturday against University of Indianapolis.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has suspended sophomore basketball student-athlete Dwayne Lathan for the first two games of the 2009-10 season for participating in a non-sanctioned event while he was a freshman at Louisiana Tech.

wow...he should have just taken about $1000 from professional agents like John Wall,
then he'd have only been penalized one game and an exhibition.

But it's a good thing he didn't decide to transfer to an NJCAA junior college first, he would be suspended for eternity.

Yes, about as much as NJCAA's ruling on John Wilkins

On appeal, the NCAA has reduced Dwayne Lathan's suspension to 1 game. Maybe Indiana State has some dirty pictures of the people at the NCAA?
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has reduced a penalty levied against Indiana State sophomore guard Dwayne Lathan to one game after the national office took a further look at his case. Lathan will serve his suspension tonight in the season opener against Nebraska-Kearney.

Also, redshirting the freshman class...........can't remember when, if ever, the Sycamores were deep enough to even consider doing this?

two of them are walk ons and they all would be deep in the playing rotation anyway

...and yes...for the inevitable question, yes, you can redshirt walk ons.

Uh, pardon me but one of them would be a starter if this was our "usual" Sycamore team of recent past.........................Jake Odum is ready now & is a hell of a point guard already. But this year's team is not a fascimile of any Sycamore team since the Renn & Menser years (was it that long ago that those two guys were terrorizing the MVC?). Anyway, those four redshirts will pay dividends down the road and will be one hell of a "scout team" for all of this year's practice.
