I didn't know Montgomery was on the hot seat or anything like that. Well, the last time GS was good was with Nellie, hopefully he's still got some gas in the tank and can help POB develop.
I don't know if Don Nelson being named coach is too good for POB. Nelson is known as a stern, "old-school" type of coach, the kind today's players love to hate.
Also, Don Nelson has always preferred veteran players and is known as a coach who doesn't really like to play rookies much. I can't believe he took the GS job without some kind of power over personnel and roster moves.

One of his star pupils, Chris Mullin, is their GM. I'm guessing that's one of things that led Nellie back to Golden State.
Having watched Nellie handle rookies over the last several years, I would say he has a mixed track record. He seems very willing to play rookies if they already have an NBA-level game, but he hasn't shown much of a personal aptitude for developing players. I think the Mavs have done a decent job of developing younger players becasue Cuban was willing to hire a lot of skills coaches. But, Since Avery Johnson took over for Nellie, the Mavs attention to basic fundamentals on a consistent basis has gone way up. Avery is much more of a teacher than Nellie was.
Two more comments,
the fact that Golden State was even willing to spend the millions they did to lure Montgomery out of his college coaching position to take over a pro team when he had absolutely NO pro experience. Then they only gave him two years before firing the guy, says these jerks who run the team don't have the ability to build a winner.
and Nelson is also known for experimenting with numerous various lineups and mixes of players, so for Patrick's sake, he might get a little playing time, but he won't get much.
Nelson likes for his bigger men to be "point forwards" and go outside to shoot.
He loved having the type of player Nowitzki is, and he even coached Manute Bol to shoot 3-pointers.
I hope POB still receives the developmental coaching he needs, but I wish GS had not hired Nellie. Nellie obviously has earned a lot of stripes, but his coaching compentency diminished the last few years in Dallas. Regardless of the impact on POB, I think this is bad move in general by Golden State.
Now I bet he wishes he stayed in college. Yeah the money is nice, but wouldn't it feel good to be big man on campus of a potential Top 25 team, have a big junior year, and then be a senior with Jeremy Fears, Deaaron Williams, and Sam Maniscalo. Sounds pretty good to me, hindsight is 20/20 though, Good Luck POB!

Sorry, I don't agree. For $3 Mill. +/yr. I'll sit on the bench and carry the other players' bags. POB had better invest his three year guaranteed money wisely, just in case. He can always go back for that degree. A few mill. in the bank can pay for that and set him up for the future, even if he's gone in three years. Heck, he'd have a long career overseas, at the very least.
