Harold McMath

Some old-timers will remember Harold MaMath.

He was from Springfield, Illinois (Springfield HS), was recruited and signed by Joe Stowell, played 4 years at BU from 1976-77 through 1979-80, the last 2 seasons were under Dick Versace. Harold was a 6'6" forward known for his excellent defense and rebounding. He lead Bradley in rebounding his first 3 seasons, and was team co-captain and a valuable reserve player as a senior on the 1979-80 MVC championship team. Harold was also one of the nicest guys to ever play for Bradley.

I came across this article- Harold has been living in Australia, and has a 6'8" son, Clay McMath who is now a freshman at Division II Bryant University (Smithfield, Rhode Island).

My all time favorite player at BU. I know it is because I was just a kid starting to watch BU. He was a high effort player and I loved rooting for him. He wasn't much on offense, but he could board.

I'm with ya Camelot. I loved watching HMac play when I was a kid. He was a real scrapper who always gave his all. He really fit the character of a Joe Stowell team. For those who watched Stowell's teams you know what I mean.

Hey! I do remember Harold McMath, which I guess makes this the first time in my life I have been classified as an "old-timer". [Heavy sigh.]

One correction...Bryant is not D-II, they are a relatively new D-I team and an independent...(2008-2009 was their first full D-I season)
They were the #306 RPI team last year, and played some pretty heavyweight opponents...
UConn, Iowa, Boston College, Rutgers, Providence, Maryland

this year Bryant plays Indiana and St. John's as well!

their head coach, Tim O'Shea, quit his job as the 7-year HEAD COACH at Ohio U. in order to step in and take Bryant from the ground up into D-I.

Good luck to his kid. I loved watching him clean the boards. What a rebounder. Big, aggressive, and always in position. A lot could be learned by our players by watching film on Harold (except his offense... We'll leave that part out).

I'll never forget "McMath walks the tightrope." I think this was a Dave Snell or Frank Bussone call that was played on Bradley TV and radio spots back in the 70's. It's been stuck in my head forever. I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers this.

He played a bunch as a freshman - 30 games averaging 3.5 ppg, 2 rpg
As a sophomore he played in just 7 games before his season ended with injury.
So now he is a redshirt sophomore..

Will never forget the night at the Fieldhouse when Harold and Carl stood in the corner of the court with Larry Bird as the Braves basically played 3 against 4 most of the game as Bird scored his college low 4 points, but Carl Nicks, think that's how you spell his name, was unstoppable as Indiana State won anyway. Nice try by Coach Versace though.

People forget that Larry Bird was not alone on that team -- Carl Nicks had NBA talent -- and played 3 seasons in the NBA
Bird & Nicks are the only two Indiana State players to have stepped on an NBA court at any time in the last 50+ years.

BTW -- Bradley has had at least 38 different players get drafted in the NBA Draft..and it's actually more because some, like Granger, don't count on BU's total in this tally.
That is BY FAR the most of any team currently in the Missouri Valley.
