but they care infinitely whether the kid has the possibility or probability of developing after he leaves there..
Mac is suspected to possibly be as old as 24, 25, 26, or even older...he may have already reached his full potential. (don't believe what's posted on DePaul web site...remember, in 2000 he enrolled in junior high in Chicago but was not eligible because he'd already been out of elementary school in Canada for more than a year..
he and his guardians, including HS coach Loren Jackson were found to have lied and falsified his documents to hide the fact that even as a freshman in high school in Chicago, he was already too old to be playing high school ball.
He was rumored to already be possibly 18 or 19 when he arrived at Chicago Julian HS...that would make him 26 or 27 now)
Very similar situation to Joey Dorsey from Memphis 2 years ago. He was a force inside blocking shots and controling the paint. Much bigger and stronger than most centers in college (6'9'' 265 lbs) but also 24 or 25 years old his Senior year. Was a bust as a pro and now is in the D league.
funny you mention Dorsey...he was a big guy with big arms, but his height was exaggerated more than about any player ever..
one possible reason he may have been unsuited to be a post man in the NBA>
(But then, same is true for Mac Koshwal...he is only about 6-7 not 6-10 as advertised.)
when Dorsey showed up at the pre-draft combine, he was measured precisely... he is 6' 6.25"
I just read a discussion in the Big East that Jerry Wainwright has basically destroyed Mac Koshwal's chances of playing in the NBA.
since the kid was in junior high and certainly since his freshman season at DePaul, there's been talk of Koshwal being a future NBA'er..
But this season has the NBA people questioning..
first because even tho he's averaging 14/11, this isn't much different than when he was a freshman...he appears to have little upside...no room for improvement.
Then, he has no outside shot and sure won't make much of a living in the NBA at 6-8 if he can't step out and shoot...he only hit about 50% and 48% from the FT line.
Koshwal's productiveness drops once he actually plays against big men in the Big East. He builds his stats largely against the plethora of bad teams on DePaul's schedule.
Lastly now his durability is being questioned...since DePaul has little else, Coach Wainwright is overusing mac and it's hurting the guy and he's missing games due to injury for the first time.
Also -- backup PG for DePaul, Mike Bizoukas is likely out for the year with a knee injury.
all of this leads to surprisingly LOW expectations...
even the official DePaul press release prior to their next game vs. Gerogetown, seems like it's already a given they are going to lose, all the want to hope for is to "hang tough".
read the release... "..DePaul faces one of the top teams in the country at Allstate Arena.
If they can approach coach Jerry Wainwright's expectations, the Blue Demons
could hang tough with No. 13 Georgetown in their 1 p.m. BIG EAST Conference home opener."
Let's put it this way: DePaul is still terrible! That's all the discussion you need. How UNI lost to them I'll never know!
