  • Intrasquad scrimmaging

BU begins intrasquad scrimmages but they are closed, and we won't get to see them until the first exhibition game in about two weeks.

Illinois has their Orange & White game at 4PM tomorrow, it's open to the public at Assembly Hall.
    IU has theirs next Saturday

Mizzou already had their Gold-Black intrasquad scrimmage...
They don't seem to have much trouble putting up points...
Kim English scored 32, Michael Dixon 22, Miguel Paul 19, and both teams hit around 40% from 3-pt range.
Bloomington Central Catholic grad Justin Safford, who reportedly BU had looked at...
scored 14 pts on 6-13, was 1-4 from 3-pt range, 6 rebs, 4 asst, but 5 turnovers and 5 fouls (there were no foulouts!)
Our old buddy Gerry Pollard got some early season action in as one of the refs...
Attendance was 5324, but that was surprisingly low as compared to the hopefull estimates of maybe getting 10K.

the scrimmage teams' coaches were - Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and University of Missouri System President Gary Forsee!

Several other teams have also already held open scrimmages...Maryland, Wake, Butler, Saint Louis, and Iowa State all have theirs today..

Justin Safford was definitely a BU recruit. I met him as a game at the Civic Center a couple seasons ago.

Do you think that any reporters will be allowed to observe todays scrimmage ? I would think that if BU wants the media to keep writing reports about this team then they at least need to allow one person to observe and write about what happened today, I know we are anxious to hear about how things are going each day with this team.

Dave Reynolds has been allowed into some scrimmages in the past, so he might have been invited, but usually they prefer secrecy.

I would think as long as you are not reporting about certain offenses or defenses that they are working on and just report about player developements that he should be allowed to be there.

Telling a reporter what he's allowed to write? Good luck... though I do think he'd like to go.

It's more like if you follow these rules we'll give you access like no one else! DR I believe has been a BU faithful and has given us information that no one else has had because JL is feeding him. There is a bit of loyalty going both ways! Why bite the hand that feeds you?

I don't recall Coach Les saying there would be transparency under his regime. Maybe I am wrong - I wasn't in Peoria area when he was hired and I no longer read the local rag.

IU had an open scrimmage Saturday that drew 750..
                  They played 5 on 5...
White team starters: Devan Dumes, Verdell Jones, Derek Elston, Bobby Capobianco, Matt Roth (subs-Hulls, Muniru, Finklemeier)
Red team starters..: Christian Watford, Jeremiah Rivers, Maurice Creek, Daniel Moore, Tom Protchard (subs-Jobe, Barnett, Gambles)
(however the teams switched players a few times)

Verdell Jones & Jeremiah Rivers, who each played point guard much of the way, each had 18 pts but only two assists each.
                  Creek had 13, Dumes 7 pts, 1 asst, Capobianco 6, Pritchard 6, Watford 5, Hulls 5, Elston 4, Gambles 4, Jobe 2, Muniru 2, Moore 0.
Matt Roth missed most of his shots, and ended with only 3 pts, and 1 reb.
However Matt was described as bigger and stronger and maybe a better defensive player...but without his offense, he might struggle to get playing time...
                  one reporter said this:
"Roth - Don't know if it was just today or a trend but he seems to have fallen
back on the depth chart. He and Moore both didn't play much both seem to
be mop up duty bound. I hope not I love his stroke."

Here's some action....Matt Roth is #30 this year

(watch about 1 minute in, Matt (#30 in white) enters and misses a 3-pointer then immed. gets dunked on at the other end--
at about 3 min. he changes to red and a minute later takes another 3-pointer.)

                  some other relevant scrimmages...

Duke actually played the nation's first D-I preseason exhibition against a D-II opponent...Pfeiffer...
and clobbered them 128-70 closer than a lot would have thought.

The long awaited debut of LeBron-killer Jordan Crawford at Xavier...was underwhelming...
Crawford had just 6 pts on 8 shots and 0-2 from 3-pt

Long Beach State...ex-BU recruit Larry Anderson scored 26

Ex-Minnesota Gopher and Molinari recruit Bryce Webster had 13 pts, 11 reb for CSF
Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

at Texas A&M-CC, Demond Watt, coached by ex-BU Brave Tim Bankston at TF North, had 16 pts, 10 rebs

USU - 7-footer Anthony DiLoreto had 7 pts

on Nov. 4 Saihou Jassey and his Walsh Univ. teammates take on Ohio State in an exhibition.

BTW-- there's discussion about the attendance woes at Missouri...
                  their scrimmage drew very poorly

I think U of I could be good this year if one of these three steps up: Jordan, Legion, Keller. Illinois has tons of talent but is lacking leadership, however they have a core of great big-men and it's a lot easy for a guard to come of nowhere. I expect the Braves will face tough challenge after they beat OState.

the Illini fans are sure optimistic but they really don't have any bruisers and could still get beat up in the league

Wow - looks like UIUC won't have problems scoring like they did in stretches in the past.

They may not have a "Bruiser" per se, but I would take the front court of Tisdale, Davis, and Keller, about anyday of the week, on almost any team in the country. Long, athletic, and they are all proficient scorers and rebounders. Plus they have a guy named Bubba... hes gotta be a bruiser right?

                            Or a sub 6-foot guard....
