  • Maroon Madness

I went to Maroon Madness last night with some diehard Saluki fans. Because of renovations underway at the SIU Arena it was held where the Women's Volleyball Team plays.. pretty small.. 1-2 thousand seats. It was packed before the end of the first set of the Vball game (Drake won by the way).

The basketball program started off a little disorganized with a 3 point shooting contest. One of the SIU woman won. Then they did a deal taking fans out of the stands to play with 4 of the men & women players. That was followed by a dunking contest. Interstingly it came down to 5'10" freshman Kendal Brown and JC transfer Jack Crowder. Brown won. Very impressive hops. He can really get up there. He also appears to be cocky and a ham.. playing it up for the crowd. Crowder also appears very athletic.

Next the women played a 7 minute scrimmage. The women's team will be challenged to win many games from the look of things. But of course it was just the first night.

Finally the men scrimmaged. It looked like the expected starters against the bench. Dillard, T Freeman, Bocot, Booker & Fay against Brown, Crowder, Evans, Teague & Freshman John Myers (who I understand will red shirt).

Without programs and actual jerseys and not knowing the players very well it was tough to keep track of who did what. Here are my impressions.

Tony Freeman is a man among boys. He is a hard body with an excellent shot. There was not a ton of D played in this.. but that is his rep. I think he will be tough to handle all season long. He may become the go to guy with the game on the line.

Dillard ran the show, but I am not sure if he has that real point guard mentallity yet. I think he is still making the transition from high school "scorer".

Bocot hit a few. As pointed out by one of the Saluke fans.. he has an odd shot for a scorer.. almost no spin. I would think in venues where there is a breeze down by the court that would hurt him. But he is smooth.

I didn't think any of the big men were overly impressive.
Booker took an elbow in the face almost immediately (SIU's first injury of the season.. saw him after the game with a rag up in the nose and a big bag of ice).
Evans took a pass off the head when he was not looking for the ball.
I know alot of the SIU fans were impressed with Teague. He is a wide wide body.. very strong looking and he was a force in this scrimmage rebounding and taking the ball up to the basket. He backed his way in over several players. My thought however was.. he fouled just about every time he was around the ball both on offense and defense. If they can get him under control he might be someone you have to deal with.

The kid who is red shirting.. Myers actually was pretty impressing hitting a number of long jumpers.

And the freshman Kendal Brown (I believe this is the coach's nephew) from Indiana was pretty impressive in the scrimmage. Looked to have a good nose for the ball.. runs well.. crisp passes.. sees the court very well. I'm sure he took a shot, but I don't recall if it went in or how his form looked. By the way for those of you who put stock in such things.. he is lefthanded.

Crowder did not show much in the scrimmage.. he appeared tired after all his dunk attempts.

As has been the case with SIU teams of the past.. every loose ball was contested. A couple of players dove into the crowd.. while pleased with their hustle I'm sure the coaches were cringing.. not wanting to risk injury during a scrimmage for the fans.

The reserves hung with the starters.. which I think says SIU will have good depth this year. You will see Crowder & Brown in the guard rotation.
Booker & Fay will be your starting forwards.. with Evans and Teague giving relief and fouls. Not sure where John Freeman fits in.. I really didn't see that much of him.

Diamond Taylor was there on the bench.

That's all I can think of.
If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks! Great report KillerB. From the sound of things SIU sounds like they are built for the big-10 --to be a VERY physical team.

It will be interesting to see if we will fare better against them by "going big", or by playing "small ball", where we try to beat them with quickness and 3-point shooting.

      Killer B - I have a few questions..

--Re: "John Myers"...do you mean Jordan Myers? ...and is it certain he will redshirt?

--Bocot has always had an odd shot from behind his head that has little spin, kinda like Tyrone Cole Scott, so do you think he'll be successful with it?

--as for Surles-Brown....so just how badly does a team need a 5-10 PG to be able to get up and dunk?
I saw both Daniel Ruffin and TCS dunk plenty of times in practice and warm ups, but as one would expect, the opportunity virtually never happened in a game.

      --did Fay look OK?

--Crowder doesn't even have a number assigned to him while all the other players do, including the walk-ons, in the preseason prospectus...so what gives?

--sounds like a fun event for the fans...I take it that the absence of Hare was a pretty obvious sign...

Yes it was Jordan Myers. I don't know if he's a 100% red shirt.. the SIU guys I was with thought it was going to happen. I am relying on them.

Bocot scored 28 or something like that against MO ST last year.. so I guess he does pretty well with no spin. It is just that most of the really good shooters have it.. and out old BU physics prof would tell us scientifically you are better off with it.. all those Newton laws of objects in motiion etc. Like I said.. if he gets in a big arena where there are some air currents.. I would think that could impact his shot. You have to wonder if that might make him a streaky shooter. I have not watched his consistency at all.

RE: Brown.. I think if you read through me report again you see I noted some other big positives on him. He is athletic.. already got some muscle.. sees the court well.. runs well.. jumps well.. passes well.. has some swagger. I think those are all things you want in a point guard and at 5'10" he is not too undersized for The Valley.

RE: Crowder.. If memory serves.. I think he had a number on his sweats.. so maybe their website is just behind on that. Like I said the players were not wearing jerseys. That's what made it hard to keep up with exactly who was doing what.

RE: Fay.. I really did not notice him on the court. Like I said.. the bigs were not overly impressive as it was kind of run and gun for 10 minutes. That's not to say he was doing poorly. In a first practice - 10 minute scramble like the organize on the court makes things a little more haphazard. I was trying to keep an eye on Freeman and Crowder.

RE: Hare.. there was a guy there behind the bench who looked like Hare (in sweats).. we could not decide if it was him or not (although one of the guys was sure it was not him).. but he was already suspended so it was not all that surprising that he was not there.
(A personal note: I misread the note I got on Hare.. as was not supposed to say anything for a couple of days.. so I inadvertantly burned a friend. Apologies to you know who!)

RE: the overall event.. I am sure it would have been better in their regulare home.. more could have come in.. the PA system would have been better. It was kind of sloppy up front (the guy mc'ing the event seemed confused aas to what would happen.. when and how) .. but overall a good night and fun for the fans and the students in particular.

One other comment-The SIU guys were concerned their team looked small.
Take that for what it is worth.

Sounds like a little different level of interest from what UNC got from "Late Night with Roy".....

funny line someone told me was on the salukiboard about Hare being dismissed...
            "Hare today, gone tomorrow"

I saw some comments about the ISU Hoopfest...

can someone fill us in...apparently a few of the players were missing...
"Dima (Dinma) was not there, maybe ill?"
"Rubin & Clark did not play"
            "Johnson sat out"
"Dinma was a no show. TJ, Clark and Rubin sat out."

            then I saw this comment...
"I do not see how Phillips will get much playing time with all of the talent on the team."

seriously?? Phillips is a returning senior starter and ISU fans think he won't even see much playing time with all the talented freshmen you have?

The flu is running thru the team right now. Several are sick, Dinma and Rubin especially. Clark has a slight ankle sprain and was held out for precautionary reasons.
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

You silly redbirds, trying to show how "hip" you are by getting the flu. Well, I gotta tell you, the avian flu is like soooo 2007, get with the program, unless they were inbreeding in Arkansas, and that's a whole other issue...

Does anyone know exactly what happened in this second incident? Or at least a rumor of what happened?
