Some Florida State football players have 2nd grade reading abilities and I would suspect it's goin on other campuses. However, it irks me that they would be accepted to play on a college team when a stud player like Wilkins can't be approved to play for us over a couple little high school classes.
I am waiting for the NCAA to just step out and say, "Yea... we discriminate against the 'little guys' and let the 'big guys' get away with much more. Sorry - Get over it and get used to it."
If anyone thinks this kind of thing could never happen at a quality school like we have in the MVC, then you probably don't remember the story of Kevin Ross. Ross was a pretty good 6'9" high school player who got a scholarship to Creighton. Despite the fact that he was illiterate after graduating from high school, and he scored a 9 on his ACT test, somehow he was made eligible at Creighton. He was never a very good college player, but what he is now most remembered for is that he left Creighton after 4 injury riddled seasons, but never learned to read.
He eventually enrolled in a grade-school reading program in Chicago at the age of 23.
His story didn't end there. A few years later he was destitute and depressed. He barracaded himself in a Chicago hotel room, threatened to shoot people, and threw all the furniture out the window of the 8th floor room.
He got treatment for his depression, and eventually sued Creighton for educational malpractice and negligence, and received a cash settlement.
ESPN did an "Outside the Lines" story about Kevin Ross a few years ago.

I bet that in the case of these players each and every one of them have severe dyslexia. Misdiagnosed learning disabilities can really hinder a child from learning or reading. I had a friend who was ADA and dyslexic and luckily his father was a child psychologist and was able to get him the help he needed. His reading skills were never off the charts and I'm sure if he ever sat down to take an SAT or ACT he would have done very poorly. Maybe these guys have a fair amount of intelligence but due to some learning disability they have a hard time reading. I would also bet that the schools and NCAA know about their condition and because of that they have to qualify the kids due to the US Disability Act. It is also against the law to release any medical condition without the persons consent.
