  • Tony Young a thug?

Tony Young, SIU's guard, now admits he tried to hurt Patrick O'Bryant and knock him out of ther game. He was annoyed that POB was dominating SIU and felt he had to do something like intentionally smashing POB in the head with his elbow. POB was obviously stunned by the blow and had only 3 points and 1 rebound after that play.

Young has now found the way teams should defend POB! "nailing a 7-foot center upside the head with a well-placed elbow to create the turning point of a tournament championship game"

Here are quotes from Tony Young--
"It was the only reason I did it." (to neutralize POB's play)
"You have all these fouls to give, so USE ONE."
"The big man was killing us."
"We had to let him feel our presence"
"So I let him know we were there."
"So he went up, and I clocked him."
"I wasn't intentionally trying to hurt him, but I wanted to send a message and give him something to think about next time he went up."
    "That's just the Saluki spirit,"

It suggests that Chris Lowery encourages his players to play that way.

Isn't that what John Cheney did last year, and got a suspension?

I would encourage everyone to email the MVC office and simply ask them to look into this matter.

I e-mailed them with the link to the story. You can e-mail all three with one e-mail by separating each address shown with a comma.

I sent an e-mail as well. Thanks for finding this... don't know if it's a case of an article misrepresenting something, but it doesn't look good.

What purpose is this going to serve? BU lost the game in the second half because SIU executed their offense and played better defense than BU.....not because Young elbowed POB in the head.

The game is over and SIU won.....and BU will be going dancin' regardless. Let's learn a lesson from the experience and move on.

I think the point is that if there is a coach in the Valley who's encouraging his players to play in a dangerous fashion, that needs to be dealt with. If, on the other hand, it's just a player who's the problem, then the player needs to be dealt with. It's not about changing the game on Sunday (we lost that one on our own), it's about protected student athletes in the MVC.

This would be a non-issue had BU won the game. I think these thug tactics don't have a place in the college game, but that's just my opinion. BU had the chance to respond, and didn't. I haven't heard one BU player or coach complain about it. I applaud JL for telling POB to 'get used to it', because it's true. Lowery is showing his true colors by endorsing this kind of play, and what goes around comes around. This should be a great lesson learned and priceless motivator for us.

And to be fair: I saw a play away from the ball where Cellus put Shaw on the floor and didn't get whistled...

About the only good that passing this to the Valley administration is that it starts a trail out there if other incidents like this occur in the future.

wow reading their board just makes my hate for them even stronger. I asked my parents if we could disown my sister for transfering to SIU this semester and they said no, which is really disappointing.

JL said as much in his radio show yesterday. People are going to go after POB because he can dominate. He will have to develop a mean streak. In the NBA getting hit upside the head is a everyday occurance. Give SIU a bit of credit that they were willing to do what it took to win. I'm not saying an intentional flagrant foul should be part of the game but playing a physical game just is. The MVC needs to get use to the rough and tumble game that the big boys play. If you watch the BigTen or the Big East you know what I'm talking about. POB is better off learning from this and I believe if the MVC is becoming a more physical league then POB will only benefit from it. I always say let them play! In the past the better players in the MVC were on the bench at the end of the game because of too many ticky tacky fouls. Let them play! If that elbo got POB off his game then he needs at least another year at BU to get ready for the NBA. Maybe we need a mean streak so players are intimidated to go through the lane against us.

                            Pete:
I also like more physical play.. The Valley really improved in this regard during the second half. I have only two places where I think the physicality really needs to be watched... an intentional elbow to the head is no different, in my book, from a punch. A punch gets you kicked out of the game. It's a bad play because it's dangerous, a blow to the back of the head could cause a very serious injury. The other thing I don't like are hard slaps to the shooting arm (both teams were doing a ton of that during the game on Sunday)...

I don't like fouls called when a guy is boxing out, or going up for the rebound. When you're going for the ball, you should be allowed to play. When you're trying to score you shouldn't get elbowed in the back of the head. Anyway, just my two cents.

...so the answer to the old question about Tony Young...
                              is he a thug???

Here's your answer - and it doesn't surprise me one bit - he's been a thug since his SIU days - now he's trying to coach a whole high school team full of kids into the next generation of thugs
