Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

I really am one for open discussion on boards, but when people repeatedly complain about JL, I just want them to provide a solution. Who is so much better that would take the program further faster than JL has. Wayne McClain is still available... Granted, Les has been here 8 years and Wayne McClain hasn't even got a sniff from another school... So maybe, just maybe BU did the right thing hiring JL. As much as I'd like it to be otherwise, we don't get our pick of any coach in the ranks; when our coaching job opens up, we don't get talked about on ESPN as the hot new opening. JL is someone who has increased the visibility and competitiveness of the program, and has greatly increased the excitement surrounding BU basketball. We're not Creighton, we're not Gonzaga, we're not Butler. But we are Bradley, and I'm OK with that.
I don't mind questioning JL, but the same argument over and over gets very old, especially when it's presented with no solutions.

For giggles, lets just say Jacobsen wins the Valley, Valley tournament and goes to the NCAA this coming season.
First four years of D-I head coaching (at a school with less going for it than BU):
2 Valley and Valley Tournament titles,
2 NCAA appearances
No losing record in either the MVC or the season
Defensive Team of the Year in 2008-9...
Good enough for BU fans? Would BU fans swap Les for Jacobsen?
No one is saying JL hasn't turned the program around, and he is a very very very personable/inspirational/likeable guy (except to other MVC Coaches and Officials)...
I can't understand why folks on this post can't ask for more from BU/Coach Les without being called names..
There are other coaches out there who can coach at Mid Majors with a lot less going for them than BU...
I also don't think giving JL 9 years (and two full recruiting classes) to help BU win a MVC or MVC tournament title is being reactionary or "full of crap"...
At some point in time the steak of the BU program should match the sizzle...
In some ways he was a victim of his (self predicted) early success at BU.
Les fans make their support known, others can make their feelings known - there is something for everyone in this Forum. I believe all still support BU and go to their games regardless....BUilding for the Future

Sound familiar(swap never won an NCAA game for Valley title)? Hypotheticals don't hold much water in sports discussions. Hypothetically as a BU fan I think we should have lured John Wooden away from Indiana State, as he was a relative unknown, and then joined the Big Ten... I agree other coaches have success, but the vast majority have not done too much better than JL. Heck lets even look at what's happened to George Mason after their Final Four run. Where are they now?

AZ I see your point but one big difference JL bleeds BU red and is as loyal to the school and community as we to him. So I believe it comes down to BU and Peoria's social core/soul where we will give our own a little more slack then someone from the outside. If JL does not get us over the hump soon then I'd expect some changes but in the meantime we believe he is the right guy and no use worrying about what ifs."Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."

My bad, next year will be JL's 8th season.
I learned how to read in college, but not how to count
I personally hope JL has great success this year, and definitely next. He has put the tools in place to do so, particularly next year. I don't want to run him out on a rail while he has put himself in position to win again.
For the sake of a lively forum however, I would have to agree with some of the more vehement JL bashers, should BU not appreciably improve the next two years, how long do we ride this horse? What would change after next year if BU can't move closer to the top by then?
What would hold BU back (other than injuries)? It would then come down to recruiting, developing, and/or the coaching/playing style of JL...
Why not hope for more? My fear of moving backwards post JL is not as strong as my hope for BU to taste a championship while I am still alive
As for dealing in speculation, isn't this what a lot of this forum is about?
There are a couple solutions to repeated posts by folks who for whatever reason want a change:
*Moderators can delete their posts
*Could create another Sports forum in BF.com just for these posters
*Folks who don't agree with their point of view don't have to read or respond to their posts - nothing ends these kinds of posts faster than ignoring them!BUilding for the Future

Evaluating a college head coach is an interesting topic for message boards. There's really no universal answer for evaluating all college coaches. For instance, I believe if Harvard hired Calapari they would of fire him before he set foot on campus for academic issues. Kentucky would fire a coach with an Altman-like NCAA 1 and done record. Then how do you properly evaluate Bob Knight?...
Personally, I am currently happy with JL's overall performance: future prospects, academic, community, facilities/fundraising, S16, and I think wins are decent in the past 4 years ( S16, another great coaching year (after losing POB, SS and XC) finising in the NIT, then if you believe (like Wesler) last year was a rebuilding year and we still finished 4th, the past 4 years are not terrible at all. ) Personally, I'd rather make another S16+ than any conference championship, so the only number in this thread that matters is 3 and a half (4 does not happen until March). If the only way to get an NCAA is winning the MVC, then win the MVC. Not because winning the MVC is the best accomplishment. The NCAA's are the accomplishment.
The evaluation of JL's performance I will focus on this year is the 5 spot. We will now have 4, 4 year possible centers recruited since the S16, and we've still only seen a short demo of one (WE). We need to be playing a statistially above average (for the MVC) center. I need to see that big man development to feel good about our future.
I think we've seen good development and recruiting of guards, Brown seems quite good for a 4. If next summer we are favorably comparing our centers statistics to the other top league performers, then I have the feeling that the wins will have taken care of themselves.

--there's complaining already by people who think mods delete too much, yet I can assure for a fact that deletions occur only rarely - perhaps weeks between occurrences, and fewer than a couple times a month.
Nonetheless, the mods leave most stuff.
--not always a good idea...there are enough forums already...and the more you split the posting between different forums, the harder it is to negotiate and read them...
--bingo - this is the correct way --
