I think the Chicago crime and traffic had a lot to do with the IOC Committees choice. With Chicago having the same amount of crime as NYC and the traffic absolutely horrendous, even with public transit, I think it was an obvious call. I wouldn't want to even attempt to drive close to Chicago during the Olympics.

Chicago crime and poverty worse than Rio? I don't think so. I think it really came down to a desire to "stick it to" the good ol' USA. Once a vocal faction in the city of Chicago made it known that many Chicagoans were opposed to the Olympics it gave the Olympic Committee the convenient excuse they were looking for. And I'll tell you something -- Rio DOES NOT have the money to
build up that city for the Olympics. They better hope the worldwide investment community floods their country with money.
Yeah I forgot also about the Braves trip there. The internet was crap in most locations, they better hope they build a better infrastructure in the next 5 or 6 years.
A huge big snake. I'd love to be that snake! She's Mary Louise Parker the star on a show called Weeds. She's in her 40s, I just put her up there in contrast to B4L's 20 somethings.

I have to disagree slightly. I think that an overwhelming factor was the fact that there has never been an Olympics in South America. Rio better get some money somewhere and fast with the World Cup and the Olympics heading their way. Now the IOC will have to go about fleecing more cities for money for the 2020 games to make up for what they will probably loose in Rio!

If you missed the story below, it provides a good status description of Rio and it's prognosis for the Olympics. Apparently, they are still feeling the bad after affects of having the Pan American games 2 yrs ago, which some estimates had the costs at $2 billion. But the thing was, Rio promised to have a bunch of upgrades and infrastructure built for the games and that didn't happen. So now, they have to have those upgrades and infrastructure built, along with a whole bunch of other buildings built. The Olympics bill for Rio is expected to cost $11+ billion by the time the games are over with. If they are barely able to cover the $2 billion Pan American Games, how they going to come up with the $11+ billion?
Will the foreign investor money flood Brazil like it did China? Will Brazil be the next hot investment play like China? And will it ultimately be the next investment bubble to burst? Time will tell........
I'm a Conservative Republican and that is just shameful . I would be curious to know if the reason for the cheering was taken out of context. Wouldn't be the first time by either side.
Don't think anyone was cheering against the U.S., but were hoping Chicago wouldn't get the Olympics. Most were just telling it like it is and to some that's wrong now days. Glad everyone has been patriotic the last several years.
On the other side of all this I hope the US citizens start to see what the Olympics has become. It is nothing but a money making corporation that fleeces a city every 4 years to host a sporting brand/event, nothing more or nothing less. Now that the US got slapped in the face again, NY last time, why are our corporate companies still paying these fleecers to co-brand with their logo? I say it is time to stop caring about this brand. They do not care one iota about the US but the $$ we generate for them. Remember that US companies pay the majority of the sponsorship deals and the balk of the network deal compared to the rest of the world. Read this article for a bit of the behind the scene deal http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/26/sp...26olympic.html
I would have loved to see the Olympics come to Chicago just for the sake of having such a historical event come to my backyard once in my lifetime. But I definately agree that the problems may have greatly outweighed the benefits, no matter how Daley and Obama tried to spin it.
I'm not an Obama fan, but I don't fault him for going to Copenhagen as all the other leaders went as well. But I guess Chicago wasn't corrupt enough, even by IOC standards!
Copenhagen is a great city! B4L would go crazy with all the site seeing. I was with a good friend and I swear we had to just stop saying,"Did you see that." because we were saying it every other minute!
Ben - I took a hard pro-US stance more because I'm sick of all that US bashing going on in the world. Rio does deserve if anyone and I'm happy for them. After seeing that short take on "Blame it on Rio", I feel I need to go down there soon.
Funny you should bring up the US bashing SFP. I thought all of the US bashing going on in the world was all due to George W. Bush. But apparently the world hates Obama as well (even if they say the opposite). I guess the world hates us no matter who the president is!
I understand that the corrupt political machine in Chicago had a lot to due with the results too, but the anti US senitment that exists throughout the rest of the world I'm sure played into this as well.

Same here. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a conservative Republican as well. Well, maybe more conservative than Republican since it's hard to tell if most Republican representatives are conservative or liberal these days! But yes, the bunch that were protesting against the Olympics and trying to cause trouble in downtown Chicago a couple of days before the announcement really turned me off. I'm sure the IOC got wind of this.
As stated above, I would have liked to see the Olympics in Chicago just for the sake of seeing the games myself. But the fact that less money will be wasted at least is a good thing during this bad economy that shows few signs of improving anytime soon.
Speaking of avatars B4L, who is that hottie you have showing on your avatar?!
