  • Northern Iowa gets commitment

Class of 2010 6'7" forward Doug McDermott of Ames, Iowa, committed to Northern Iowa. He is the son of former UNI coach and current Iowa State coach Greg McDermott.

Another change at Northern Iowa- Incoming junior college transfer, Antonio Jones (from Kansas juco Coffeyville CC), has left the team, and is no longer at Northern Iowa.

Most kids that play college ball get a lot of attention because they are the best player on their high school team.
McDermott, though, has certainly gotten used to someone else getting the attention, as he has perhaps the best high school player in the nation on his high school team, Harrison Barnes.
I have a question for any of the UNI fans...in this guy's blog, he says Grag McDermott wasn't even a starter when he went to watch the Ames team. How come?
A look at Harrison Barnes and Doug McDermott and their performance against Des Moines Lincoln.

Antonio Jones was pegged by many as a 6th man....a replacement for Travis Brown....without Jones, their bench and depth take a little hit. They can now least afford any injuries.

Doug wasn't a starter. He had 4-5 other D-I athletes. No mistake about it though, Doug was all-tournament at state. His 20+ point performance in the semifinals were something to watch. I don't know where Doug fits in. He's listed by Bob Gibbons as the #140 recruit nationally, and ESPN ranks him high. He is skinny like most HS post player athletes, but will obviously have to get stronger. Hopefully, he will be able to have the luxury of redshirting his freshman year, b/c it would mean O'Rear is back with Pehl and Jake Koch making good improvements and stepping up to be big contributors. If not, his outside shot should help the team. He really has a knack for being around the ball off the rebound.

As for Jones, he was going to have a hard time finding alot of minutes. It was going to make for a major logjam of minutes b/t himself, Sonnen, and James. I think most feel as though Ali, Kwadzo, and Johnny once again would be the starters, with Dunham getting alot of reserve minutes. Haak would probably get similar minutes to last year, and Brown's minutes would be divided up b/t Jones, Sonnen, and James. It just makes it easier for Sonnen and James to find time in their early playing careers. I can see where you're coming from, tornado, in thinking depth could be an issue (and with several injuries it very well could be...but that could be said for all teams). Sonnen and James should hopefully have a chance to crack the 10 min/game mark this year, giving UNI 6 guards in the double digit minute category.

I'm more interested in seeing what the minute breakdown will be for the posts with the 3 seniors and O'Rear, and then the newcomers Jake Koch and Austin Pehl.
