Anthony Parker has been the star for Maccabi Tel Aviv for the past few years, leading them to 3 Euroleague titles and a runner-up spot last year. But now AP has signed with the Toronto Raptors, leaving a large void for Maccabi.
They have just signed former MVC star Rodney Buford to fill the wing guard spot in the lineup and to hopefully provide some scoring.
Rodney Buford is Creighton's all-time leading scorer, and was 2nd in the MVC voting for Player of the year twice as a junior and senior (1998 and 1999). He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 NBA draft (53rd pick overall) by the Miami Heat. He also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Memphis Grizzlies in his NBA career, as well as for a couple teams in Europe.
He twice failed drug tests in the NBA and was also suspended while playing for a Greek team for a drug violation. He has been clean for the last several years, but supposedly the contract with Maccabi includes a clause that would allow Maccabi to void the contract if he fails a drug test.
Here is another article that is not very flattering. It says this about Buford--
Buford, picked at No. 53 by Miami heat in the 1999 NBA Draft, is considered an outstanding athlete and shooter but has a reputation for being a selfish player and mediocre on defense.
Here is a nice bio of Rodney Buford that includes his accolades with Creighton. Buford is one of just 3 players in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to be named All-Conference 4 years in a row (2nd team his freshman season, and 1st team the next 3 years). He was also an Honorable Mention All American his senior year (1999).--
