Negedu's diagnosis is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a condition of the heart that leaves it vulnerable to repeated problems and may require medicines that might inhibit athletic performance.
This is the same condition that has resulted in the sudden death of top athletes such as Hank Gathers..

Negedu's basketball career is said to be done per Jeff Goodman of FoxSports

Tennessee player Emmanuel Negedu had an implantable defibrillator placed in his chest to electrically shock his heart should he ever again have a sudden, life-threatening heart stoppage again.
He will not play this year, and he may never play according to sources at the school.

Up 'til yesterday - there was still some hope that Emmanuel Negedu might still be able to play basketball.
Reportedly he had clearance with some restrictions from the doctors and was still hoping to get back on the roster at Tennessee.
Unfortunately yesterday, in a radio interview, Bruce Pearl said he's not going to allow Negedu to play and will allow him to transfer elsewhere or stay and NOT play.

Here's a followup on Emmanuel Negedu,. the Tennessee kid who collapsed because of a seirous heart rhythm disturbance, then got a pacemaker/defibrillator..
Now he says his doctors have clerared him to play...
Get the latest University of Tennessee Vols football, basketball and Lady Vols schedule, news, scores, analysis, rumors, and more from GoVolsXtra and the Knoxville News Sentinel.
BUT -- as we saw once before in the Nick Knapp case --
the school and the team WILL NOT LET HIM PLAY, so he is done at Tennessee.....

Tom Crean was trying to land a kid who's life might be at risk should he play...
but again, Crean is thwarted........the IU administration says no to signing the kid, out of concerns for the kid's health and the liability if an adverse event happens.

After visiting New Mexico, and even before receiving full assurance that he'd be cleared to play - Emmanuel Negedu has announced he will transfer to New Mexico and accept a basketball scholarship being offered by Steve Alford.

It's too bad Negedu feels he has to put his life at risk and continue to play college ball. Would have been a great story if UT would have continued a scholarship for him and helped him get started in a different career path..BUilding for the Future

So Emmanuel Negedu lands at New Mexico - but in order to clear space and open up a scholarship, Steve Alford had to cut a kid who
the local press says wanted to stay and was willing to even write a letter to the local press begging to stay on scholarship --

followup on Emmanual Negedu --
the good news -- he appears healthy and is playing for New Mexico --
the bad news -- New Mexico got hammered by 25 points yesterday at Cal...
Negedu with only 2 pts -- dropping his averages to 3 ppg, 2 rpg, 2.5 TO/gm
