  • Jucos in the MVC

Many Junior College transfers have had success in the MVC, and every year some of the top players in the Valley are juco transfers, including previous Player of the Year (Booker Woodfox), and many All-MVC players (incl. Theron Wilson).
Joe Book just listed his projected top 15 seniors in the MVC, and 8 of them are juco transfers.

But the usual trend is that junior college players don't stand out their first seasons in the MVC, but then can excel their senior seasons. Very few MVC jucos in past seasons average double figures their junior years.
Last year was a good year for jucos, yet only 4 first-year jucos (all guards) were above 10 ppg-
    Clevin Hannah (WSU)- 11.2 ppg
    Rashad Reed (InSU)- 11.0 ppg
    Lloyd Phillips (ISU)- 10.6 ppg
    Dodie Dunson (BU)- 10.1 ppg

Also, Theron Wilson did it for BU in 2007-08 with 11.7 ppg. And in 2004-2005 both Tony Bennett (11.8 ) and Lawrence Wright (10.1) did it.
Marcellus Sommerville averaged 15.6 ppg his first season after transferring from a juco as a sophomore in 2003-04, but he was not a typical juco recruit. Those are the only juco recruits in recent BU history to average over 10 ppg their first seasons. So Dodie Dunson is in select company.

Who will be the top incoming juco players this year?

    Juco Players on Roster

Here's how many juco players each Valley team has one the roster...

    .........1st year jucos....returning jucos
BU ........NONE...................2, but Dodie played only 1 yr at juco and one at D-I
    Creighton..TWO..................2
    Drake.......NONE..................1
    Evansville..NONE.................NONE
    ISU...........TWO.................TWO
    InSU.........ONE...................1
    MSU..........ONE..................NONE
    UNI...........NONE.................1
    SIU...........THREE...............NONE
    WSU.........NONE................TWO

so looks like ISU and SIU are into the juco mode the most....and Creighton is doing it a bit, too...
BU is getting out of the juco habit this season, and Drake, Evansville, and UNI haven't done a lot of jucos

JW will be a JUCO, so we'll have ONE next year. Sean Harris will be ONE also the following so we are not going away from that trend just not as much as in the past. I'm sure we are right now watching a few JUCO players.

Wilkins and Harris, like Cellus will still be 3-year players in D-I so they are a little different than most jucos...
I just like that we have such a diverse and talented group of freshman this year

          Da Coach-

I know he didn't technically get to 10PPG, but Ali Farokhmanesh averaged 9.6 PPG overall and 10.2 PPG in conference. UNI also has a 2nd year JC (kind of...more like 3rd year) in Adam Rodenberg. He went to Kirkwood CC (same as Ali) for 2 years, then to Cal-Irvine for a semester, and then to UNI. He averaged only 6 min/game. It's true, UNI doesn't go the Juco route very often. For some reason, they just don't pan out alot of times. It's been that way going back to the Weaver era. Maybe that's the way it is at most schools...I just don't know.

Does anyone know the breakdown of MVC Jucos in the past five years or so who have gone to JC DI or DII schools?

2010 juco recruit Carlton Guyton of Mineral Area CC, a 6'4" shooting guard, has committed to Kent State over Illinois State and Drake.
He is originally from Rich South High School in south suburban Chicago.
He averaged just 5.6 ppg as a freshman at MACC, but averaged 17 ppg as a senior in high school.
