  • The #5 & #6 guards in the rotation

BU and Jim Les like to use guards. In fact we regularly play 3 on the floor at once, and sometimes four, and at least five different guards log minutes in nearly every game.

That means you have to have at least five dressed and ready to play unless you want to be getting caught short with fatigue and injuries...
Over the past several years here are the minutes and production of the 5th & 6th guards in the rotation...

2005-2006 (behind Bennett, Ruff, Franklin, Crouch)
    5th-Tauai 15 min per game, 6th-Ray Brown 7 mpg, 7th-Adams 6 mpg

2006-2007 (behind Franklin, Crouch, Ruffin, Tauai)
5th-Danny Adams 19.5 min per game, 6th-Andrew Warren 13.5 min per game

2007-2008 (behind Crouch, Ruff, Warren and Sam M.)
5th-Cole-Scott 13.1 min per game, 6th-Lavin 3 min per game

2008-2009 (behind Sam M., Dodie, Chris R., and Eddren)
5th-Darian Norris 12.2 minutes per game and 6th-Lavin at 1 min per game

I think you can see in the years we were deepest at the guard position (2005-2006 and 2006-2007) we were definitely a stronger team.

But the 5th guard regularly is called upon to play 12-19 minutes per game...
so just who will be our 5th & 6th guards...
As you recall, only 4 scholarship guards played in Brazil (Dodie, Roberts, Eddren, Sam M.)
and maybe we will have Andrew Warren back at full strength...but if any of those guys goes down with injury, we will have only FOUR returning scholarship guards on the bench.

So I believe there will some minutes at guard beyond those four guys plus Andrew...so who will it be?
Are Dyricus or Eastman going to get the call, or will Ryan Phillips get to actually log some decent minutes as Danny Adams did in his final two years on the hilltop?

I actually think there's a pretty good chance Ryan Phillips will get the call occasionally. He's put in his time for four years, he knows the system and what Coach Les wants of him, he played a bunch in Brazil, and he has the ability to help out in short stretches, and I think JL has some confidence in him or he wouldn't have played him in Brazil.

I am hoping RP can give the team the kind of contribution DA did in 2006....

Hey...here's an unfortunate example of a kid having exactly the same kind of problem Andrew Warren is having...but it has now happened right at the beginning of his senior year.

Pitt's senior guard Jermaine Dixon has just re-fractured his 5th metatarsal bone, which had been previously repaired surgically.
He has now undergone a repeat surgery...I wish him well....maybe AW can call the guy and give him some encouragement!!
