  • Could there be this much difference between Peoria and Little Rock, Arkansas?

The following might be hard to believe, but it's true-

When a Bradley basketball player was accused by a woman of physical abuse because she claimed she was pushed and got a small cut on her lip, the player was arrested immediately, jailed, and prosecuted, despite the fact that the alleged victim asked for the charges to be dropped. In addition, the local newspaper named the player immediately and covered the story extensively, and demanded swift and severe punishment, and complained when the player was reinstated after an appropriate punishment and suspension. Also, the newspaper continued to refer to the criminal case for the next year every time the player made the news for any good reason. Also, the University administration took the case seriously, suspended the player immediately, and did their own thorough investigation.

Contrast that with the case in Little Rock, Arkansas-
On August 27, 3 University of Arkansas basketball players were accused of rape by a young woman, who claims she was held captive in a locked fraternity room, and raped repeatedly by the players. Despite her detailed description of this horrific crime, and the identification of the players, the state prosecutor refuses to file charges because he said there is no proof that the sexual relations weren't consensual!
Washington County deputy prosecutor Dustin Roberts said Wednesday the sexual acts "seemed consensual" and filed no charges against the players.

Also, the University's Chancellor immediately came to the defense of Coach John Pelphrey's program and the players. He said he has no plans to issue discipline, and plans to leave things to Coach Pelphrey, who he feels "is the man who is going to turn it around"-
"will handle this the appropriate way and that it will ultimately be resolved fairly and the right way."

The Police, and the State's attorney were careful not to identify the players involved, the University refuses to identify them, and the media is also careful not to name the players, so we don't know who they were! In fact, now 2 weeks after the alleged rape, the media is still refusing to name the players, and seems disinterested in getting to the truth in the story! Also, there has still been no announcement that Coach Pelphrey plans any discipline.--

This is not the only recent case of players getting into trouble. Coach Pelphrey has had to discipline other players. Patrick Beverley was suspended last fall, then quit the team. 2 starters, Jason Henry and Courtney Fortson, along with 2 reserve players were also suspended last season. Henry was dismissed last spring, and the 2 reserves also were dismissed. There were 2 recent DUI incidents, a former player (Beverley)who alleges that he had people writing term papers for him, questions about recruiting violations, and one of the worst APRs in the country that has resulted in NCAA penalties that reduced scholarships.

In fact, it appears the only Arkansas player who could be in trouble is Courtney Fortson, who was not one of the players accused of rape, but he is in trouble for something silly he jokingly said on his twitter page.-

Meanwhile, the 18-year old female has hired her own lawyer and is still trying to get the case prosecuted. She claims the State Prosecutor is closely associated with the Arkansas Athletic Department and has a conflict of interest (he is the son-in-law of former longtime Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles). She wants a special prosecutor named.-
Meanwhile, the woman??™s lawyer said Friday that they may move forward with other actions after charges were not filed by the prosecutor??™s office.
???The victim and her family were obviously very surprised and disappointed by the decision of the Washington County Prosecutor??™s Office to not only refuse to file charges in this case, but also by their failure to conduct an independent and thorough investigation of their own,??? John D. Bass said in a written statement.
The family of the 18-year-old UA student is considering requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor because of a ???professional conflict,??? between Arkansas staff and the prosecutor??™s office, Bass said. In the statement, Bass identifies Washington County prosecutor John Threet as the son-in-law of former Arkansas athletics director Frank Broyles. Trainor, the UA spokesman, is identified as Threet??™s brother-in-law in Bass??™ statement.
???Another option would be the possibility of a civil suit involving some or all of the myriad of individuals and entities involved in the incident and investigation,??? Bass said. ???The family would like to thank everyone for respecting their privacy in this difficult time."

The Ruff incident is nothing compared to this IMO. Rape is such a horrendous criminal offense that even criminals find rapist as monsters. Again we do not know what really happen but a few facts at this juncture would have been appropriate. NEwspapers use to give us the facts not they only give us what their agenda cals for. The difference between LR and Peoria is that the PJS believes that by blasting BU they can sell more papers and the LR paper believe in the long run it is better to be upbeat about their school because it will help them sell more in the long run.

Here is the latest on the rape claim by an 18 year old female student at Arkansas against 3 UA basketball players. The coach and athletic department says there is no evidence the rape occurred, and the state prosecutor also says there will be no charges because they don't believe the young woman.

Well, today things became a little more bizarre. Despite all the denials, and blindly supporting his players, Coach Pelphrey announced that he will suspend at least one of the 3 players involved, maybe more. Strange, since they have said they believe the players are innocent!
However, they still refuse to release the identity of any of the 3 players, and they will not discuss the details of the punishment "because of federal privacy laws"!

It's Fayetteville, not Little Rock...there's a world of difference between the two. You probably don't really want to know all that really goes on in those hills of northwest Arkansas...

There may not be too much difference between Peoria and Little Rock, but between Peoria and Fayetteville...more difference than you can possibly imagine.

Yea... and let's not just limit it to the hills of NW Arkansas. I drove through back roads of Central/SW Missouri and then into Central/NW Arkansas last year.... YIKES!!!

Revisiting this case of an alleged rape of a young woman by several Arkansas basketball players who were never prosecuted, and were protected and supported by the university, and the local media, who refused to investigate or even name the players.

Now, after a great deal of pleading by a lawyer for the young woman who has persisted in demanding justice, it appears an independent prosecutor will review this case to see if it was handled fairly.

Good Then maybe we will know the truth If this was consensual or not, you would think players (people) would abstain from such actions and know that by participating in such, could lead to serious replications (the Duke Case)
As for a push (if there was one) = a rape, lets get real! As for the Ruff case there was a charge by the police because of the cut lip and a public report on file at the PD. As for the other I didn't see where they were ever charged, no mention of physical evidents and no public report on file. Maybe schools are just taking the wait and see, let the law handle it, before we react, after what happen at Duke
I thought and still do, that at the time Ruff got hosed and the woman was in the wrong place and was the aggressor The paper picked up on it as they do on a lot of case's that are similar and ran with it. But to keep running with it and the constant referring to it every time Ruff's name was mention was JUST WRONG

it is interesting that the names of the three basketball players who were accused of rape have never been revealed and I cannot find any publication that gives their names...
BUT...of interest also is that the Razorbacks played their first exhibition game last night and coach John Pelphrey had said those involved in the incident would be disciplined.

Here were Pelphrey's words in August...
"I can assure you that there will be meaningful consequences for those
individuals who have violated team rules and have not met the expectations
of conduct required of our student-athletes"

then later the Northwest Arkansas Morning News reported that three players would serve 2 or 3 game suspensions....and named Marcus Britt, Glenn Bryant, and Nick Mason.

A fourth player was later also given a "suspension" for posting insensitive remarks about the incident on his Twitter, and that player was identified as Courtney Fortson.

So - I guess if Pelphrey is really serious about discipline, then all these four players must have sat out last night's public exhibition game, right??
NOPE-- Only walk on Nick Mason was held out...but the other three...Britt, Bryant, and Fortson all played but did not start.

It's a mess down in Fayetteville. Many sites have the list of DUIs and suspensions that have gone on during Pelphry's two years.

Apparently Mr. Pelphrey is taking one page out of Ol Nolan's playbook and another out of his own former coach Pitino's.

Little wonder that Dana bailed on this situation before the dust settled on his coaching tenure there. I realize he caught a lot of grief for leaving after one day on the job, but would you want to deal with this stuff?

In addition to those four players, now Arkansas is also saying Marshawn Powell and Stefan Walsh will also serve suspensions for Arkansas..
but the coach hasn't suspended anyone yet...and is still trying to devise a plan to make it easy on HIMSELF...
                            these are his own words!!!

"Likely suspensions will be staggered so the Razorbacks (meaning Coach Pelphrey)
are not without a large chunk of the roster at once. Pelphrey, who is working with athletic department
administrators in setting the suspensions, said once the suspensions are announced next week,
he does not anticipate them to change."

so he wants to look tough and hand out suspensions, but he doesn't want to do it in a fashion that might actually have any significant impact on him or the team..........OK...got it...

Sometimes the whole team, university and fans must suffer to apply the added peer pressure to be certain actions like these NEVER happen again. Too bad they missed this opportunity.
