  • The Athlon Sports College Basketball 2009-2010 Preseason Preview issue is out.

I will spare you the long details unless you want them...then just PM me..
but suffice to say the guy who wrote the Valley section (the Wichita State Shockers' beat writer) doesn't think a lot of BU, and nobody else writing any seciton in the entire issue seems to even know that the Missouri Valley plays basketball...
PM me if you want the long and detailed version......

By the way, BYU is the #1 pick in the Mountain West!!

And Western Carolina is the clear and undisputed best team and #1 pick in the Southern Conference.

BU's other opponents- as how they're picked within their conference
    Loyola - 9th
    Iowa State - 9th
    NIU 5th
    Illinois 5th
    Utah 4th
    Oklahoma State 5th
    Wofford 4th
    Presbyterian 10th
    Idaho State 5th

      T

I don't care for Athlon's coverage but I admit being curious. What are the Valley predictions 1-10??
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

UNI, CU, ISU, WSU, SIU, BU, InSU, MSU, DU UE
as picked by Paul Suellentrop the Wichita writer who does the Valley section

it was interesting reading but the sections that named all the best players nationally, best in each position, best non-major players (they had a Top 40 even in non-major players)
and even an NBA draft of just who's in college all the way to a 4th round if there were one, doesn't mention a single Valley team or player believe it or not.
Outside of the section on the valley, the MVC isn't mentioned and it's treated as if it doesn't exist...except they list Jake Kelly and Josh Parker as impact transfers for next year...and they have only one MVC in the Field of 65 in the NCAA Tournament and it's UNI losing their first and only game.

Thanks for saving me some money. I know what I won't be buying.

I am pretty much done buying anything from the regular media. I'm done pumping my dollars into an agenda-driven medium. Local rags to national mags... they all get the snub from me. Kiss it.

I still like to read as long as there's not much else on college basketball, but...
The next couple issues that come out I will just sit and get a cup of coffee at Barnes & Noble and read & take notes.
I prob. won't buy when the smaller conferences that comprise 270 of the 340 D-I teams (virtually 3/4 of all college basketball) gets relegated to about 1/3 of the magazine.

You're not going to get much preseason pub when your conference has had no at large bids and no NCAA wins the last two years.

It's just like a big family. Think about it. There's high-majors, low-majors, and mid-majors. In a family, oldest kid, youngest kid, middle kid. Which kid gets shafted the most?

I don't know. I'm not familiar with Quinnipiac. I stopped reading Athlon a long time ago. I do enjoy reading some preseason magazines and online countdowns, but Athlon is just a waste of time in my opinion.

It is interesting to go back and see the picks from previous years from various magazines.

I expect big things from Taylor Brown and Chris Roberts this year. They didn't put up big numbers last year (except the 75' shot), so I don't expect many people from the outside to see that looking at the stats. BU returns two guys that averaged double digits, so I would expect them to get mentioned in the preview articles.

pub is nice, but being under the radar has its advantages

btw-- as way of recap...and to show how unreliable the predictions of some of these guys have been recently...

all the preseason guides missed totally on Drake two years ago..and pegged them last or near last
all the preseason guides missed totally on UNI last year..calling them middle of the pack
and both the last two years they all picked SIU right at the top
...and yet....there WERE well informed people on this board that saw all those things coming while the experts did not...

Last year one site picked Drake 2nd and getting an AT LARGE bid!

Two years ago, Lindy's picked the SALUKIS to be the runaway winner of the MVC and ranked inside the NATIONAL TOP 20!@!!
                            - yet several here accurately predicted they would be down each year after the Bruce Weber/Matt Painter recruits finsihed up and left.

and there are many more examples...
I agree that unexpected issues like injuries can cause a prediction to fail...but ALL THOSE bad misses I have cited were NOT the results
of unforseen issues nor injuries...they were simply bad predictions that were way, way off!
