  • Minnesota Assistant Coach Leaves and Takes Job in Utah

No, it's not Jim Molinari, but it's a story with an interesting twist and it shows that hiring a kid's high school coach isn't exactly an altogether new concept.

James Ware was a basketball coach at Hopkins HS (Minnesota) when his star player was Kris Humphries (2003), one of the best high school players in the nation.

Humphries had verballed and signed a LOI to Duke, then Dan Monson (head coach at University of Minnesota) hired Ware as an assistant at Minnesota, and shortly thereafter, Humphries renegged on his committment to Duke, received a release, and then went to Minnesota where his high school coach was working.

I know from everything I've heard, Minnesota is very happy with him. I think he'd serve a good purpose as an assistant, being almost like a defensive coordinator is to a football team. I don't know if he's offensive minded or a great enough recruiter to get a lot of attention as a head coach again. But I'm not an AD, and if a school somewhere decides that defensive improvement is one of the biggest keys they are looking for in a new coach, it's possible that they'd hire Mo.
