As you all know by now, Ron Artest was involved in the infamous basketbrawl at Auburn Hills.
As part of his punishment handed down, he is to do 60 hours of "public service".
I saw part of his "public service" in a short clip on ESPN a couple nights ago, and below is an article about it.
One thing that bothers me is that the public service was meant for him to use his talent and platform to go out
and hopefully teach children to do better and to not get involved in illegal fracases like the ones he is prone to.
BUT- is that what Ron Artest is doing. Several reporters who saw and heard him giving his "public service" speeches
to kids in schools say that all he is doing is using the opporunity to try to clean up his own image
and justify his role in the fight.
"Someone started trouble and I ended it...
"I would always encourage you to protect yourself but in certain situations, if you can avoid them, avoid them..."
..............is what Ron Artest told about 50 children Wednesday at a panel on
Black empowerment at the Judge Mathis Community Center."
Other reportters also feel Artest is hurting rather than helping kids:
This guy likens having Artest speak to kids about staying away from violance to asking Barry Bonds to speak to kids about the dangers of doing drugs:
