  • Immediate Eligibility Waiver

the NCAA issues TWO MORE waivers for players to become immediately eligible after transfer, so they don't have to sit out a year...

and again...both at transfers of possibly impact players to BCS schools.

Duke's Elliott Williams transfers to Memphis and doesn't have to sit out a year.
WMC Action News 5 leads the Mid-South in breaking news and weather for Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Olive Branch, Southaven and West Memphis.

and Kentucky's Matt Pilgrim - booted at UK by Calipari - transfers to Oklahoma State and doesn't have to sit out a year.

can anyone name a single time this has happened where a potentially impact player transfers to benefit a mid-major?
Nope...it only happens when it involves one of the big boys.

At least the Pilgrim case makes sense that it happened. Transferring to a program, then getting booted a year later without playing a single game....there's logic there.

But that freakin' Williams case and using illness of a family member as a crutch....you can't argue about it because it's illness, but you just know it's overblown.

So do you believe Jake Kelly should have his waiver granted? Is using his mother's death a "crutch"?

I don't have a feel one way or the other as to what "should be" done, only the consistent challenge that this has been decided very inconsistently and greatly favors bigger name players who go TO BCS schools.
When it is lesser players or going to mid-majors, it never gets granted...or at least in all my searches I have not found such an example.

I don't know enough about that situation to fairly tell....all I know is in the particular case I was talking about, it was an abuse of the power.

TAS what do you know of the Elliot Williams case? I read where his Mom has cancer.

Any idea if Jake Kelly received a waiver to play at ISUblue yet? Knowing the circumstances of his request, I strongly believe he is asking for the waiver for the "right" reasons and hope for his sake that it is approved.

What were his circumstances? His mother just passed away if I remember correctly?

While I believe this is a good reason to transfer and play right away, some could (will) argue (not myself specifically) that a year off of basketball to spend with his family could benefit him more then playing right away...

I doubt anyone knows the whole story but the NCAA has said repeatedly they are trying to crack down on these waiver requests as some requests are suspect.

Hardship waivers were supposed to be a good faith effort on the part of the NCAA to give players in difficult circumstances a chance to start fresh. It's a good idea in theory, but nothing in the world of college hoops is as simple as it seems, writes Dana O'Neil.

....there's good evidence that this was not the reason Kelly left Iowa, and if it was, then why did he stay until half the team was run off at the same time by Lick?

I think it's believed that his mom isn't exactly close to Memphis, and that the move really doesn't get him that much closer.

It was the right thing to do! He will make them a lot tougher but I still say we should be able to handle them, regardless.
