Sophomore mens basketball players Luke Zeller and Kyle McAlarney appeared on a local TV show in South Bend and did promotional ads for the show.
NCAA Bylaw 12.5.3. states that while athletes can appear on shows, ???‚¬?“the student-athlete shall not make any endorsement, expressed or implied, of any commercial product or service.???‚¬??
One UND football player also violated the Bylaw.
The story goes on to note that in a similar action last year, USC???‚¬?„?s QB Matt Leinart did a post-game interview with ESPN and when they were done, a host asked Leinart to do a promotional spot for ???‚¬?“SportsCenter,???‚¬?? USC sports information director Tim Tessalone recalled Thursday. Leinart was to say ???‚¬?“???‚¬??????‚¬??SportsCenter???‚¬?„? is next.???‚¬??
He obliged and was deemed ineligible for the Rose Bowl before being reinstated by the NCAA because it deemed Leinart???‚¬?„?s actions ???‚¬?“unintentional and inadvertent???‚¬?? according to a Los Angeles Times story about the incident."
(I suppose it's no coincidence that Leinert was a major superstar and quite possibly the big draw for viewers of the game on TV.)
The ND players involved are claiming they didn't know what they did was a violation.
Just curious to see if the NCAA excuses the violation because the kids were ignorant of the Bylaw.
Maybe the "I didn't know" alibi should have been allowed for Will Franklin and Patrick O'Bryant. yeah---- right---
